2 Walgreens stores fined for negligence related to temporary closures

Iowa Fines Two Walgreens Pharmacies Over Unannounced Closures

Two Walgreens pharmacies in Iowa are facing state sanctions following an investigation into unannounced temporary closures and communication failures that left patients stranded without their medications. The Iowa Board of Pharmacy recently charged a Walgreens store in Burlington and another in Fort Madison with negligence in the practice of the profession and failure to engage in the business for which they are licensed, as reported by newsfromthestates.com.

The disciplinary action brings to light a breakdown in patient communication during staffing crunches. For patients relying on timely prescription refills, the invisible closures created immediate hurdles, exposing vulnerabilities in how major retail pharmacies handle sudden operational rollbacks.

The Burlington Closure and Digital Disconnect

The trouble in Burlington began on October 23, 2025, when the pharmacy temporarily closed due to a shortage of pharmacists needed to staff the business. According to the board, the store steered all customers’ prescriptions to a Walgreens location in Fort Madison but failed to communicate that information to the public, its customers, or even its own staff.

The communication gap persisted for weeks. As late as December 10, 2025, the Burlington store’s website indicated the pharmacy was open for business. However, phone calls to the pharmacy were met with a recorded message stating it was closed, yet that message included no information on where customers could redirect their prescriptions.

“No notice was given to anyone,” the board stated, noting that the oversight inconvenienced customers and caused significant delays in patients receiving essential medications. Complicating matters further, some prescriptions had already been filled at the Burlington store but not yet dispensed, meaning patients who sought help at other pharmacies still could not get their medications.

Parallel Failures in Fort Madison

The operational breakdown was not isolated to Burlington. The board alleges that the exact same set of difficulties occurred when the Walgreens pharmacy in Fort Madison temporarily closed on November 7, 2025, due to a purported lack of staff.

Publicly available board records identify the precise locations of the two stores only by Walgreens’ internal store-numbering system. However, the company’s online records indicate the affected locations are situated at 3245 Agency St. in Burlington and 2639 Avenue L in Fort Madison.

Penalties and New Compliance Mandates

As a result of the infractions, the Iowa Board of Pharmacy fined each store $1,000. Beyond the financial penalties, the state ordered both locations to develop new operational policies designed to supplement the existing guidelines that the two stores allegedly ignored in 2025.

Whether these supplemental policies will prevent future communication breakdowns during pharmacist shortages remains to be seen as the stores work to comply with the board’s mandates.
