2026 USA Fencing National Championships named economic impact champion

When more than 6,100 fencers descended on Portland for ten days this summer, they carried more than foils, épées, and sabers—they brought a $9.75 million economic impact that has now earned the 2026 USA Fencing National Championships and July Challenge a prestigious spot on Sports Destination Management’s list of 2026 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism. USA Fencing reported that the publication honored the event in the Large Market category alongside host partner Travel Portland, recognizing what the tournament accomplished off the strip as much as on it.

The scale of the gathering was staggering by any measure. Held June 27 through July 6 at the Oregon Convention Center, Summer Nationals drew competitors ages 7 to 89 from 46 states, cementing its status as the largest fencing tournament in the world. Over those ten days, USA Fencing crowned national champions in every weapon, age group, and para category, welcoming athletes from nearly every corner of the country. The economic footprint stretched across the region: athletes, families, coaches, and fans generated an estimated 9,000 hotel room nights and spent money across hotels, restaurants, local shops, and attractions—expenditure that SDM calculates at $9.75 million in total economic impact for the Portland area.

A Homecoming After Forty-Nine Years

This year’s tournament marked a significant return to the City of Roses. It was the first time Summer Nationals had come back to Portland since 1977, when USA Fencing was still known as the Amateur Fencers League of America. The city carries deep fencing roots—the Portland area is home to two-time Olympic saber champion Mariel Zagunis—adding local significance to an event that welcomed participants from nearly every state and crowned champions across all disciplines, from youth categories to senior and para divisions.

“Summer Nationals brings thousands of athletes and their families to one city for 10 days, and Portland made every one of them feel at home,” USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews said. “We’re grateful to Travel Portland and our partners in Oregon for helping us deliver an event worthy of this recognition, and for showing what fencing can mean to a host community.”

Nine Thousand Room Nights in a $114 Billion Industry

According to Sports Destination Management, the 2026 Champions of Economic Impact combined to contribute $1,850,835,000 to the national economy and 943,810 hotel room nights over the past year—both figures up from 2025. The sports tourism industry overall packs a $114 billion wallop, drives $47.1 billion in direct spending, and supports close to 665,000 jobs, sportsdestinations.com reports.

The impact ripples beyond the convention center walls. SDM notes that participants in these events often venture into neighboring destinations and cities, causing an even greater economic ripple effect throughout the region. For Portland, that means the benefits extended to businesses well outside the downtown core, touching everything from suburban hotels to regional attractions and dining establishments.

More Than Medals—A Full Economic Ecosystem

SDM Publisher Scott Swoger emphasized the diversity of recognized events, noting that the awards spanned everything from bass fishing and rodeo to soccer, baseball, and volleyball, proving that niche sports can drive major economic impact when hosted at scale.

“The nominations we saw were incredible,” Swoger said. “What really struck us was the variety of events. … It is absolutely clear that there is a demand for quality sports events at every level, and that event owners and destinations are answering that call.”

For local hoteliers and restaurateurs, the 9,000 room nights translated directly into summer occupancy and revenue during a critical period. The $9.75 million figure captures not just the convention center spending, but the full ecosystem of visitor expenditure that sustained local businesses during the ten-day run. The full list of winners appears in the November/December 2026 issue of Sports Destination Management and online at the publication’s website.
