Fatal Crash on I-95 in Chesterfield
A Tuesday night collision on Interstate 95 in Chesterfield County has claimed the life of a 37-year-old local resident. Virginia State Police were dispatched to the scene just south of the Route 288 interchange at approximately 10:15 p.m. on November 3, as reported by WWBT.
The incident involved three vehicles caught in a chain-reaction sequence on the interstate. Investigators determined that a 2015 Chrysler 200 had become disabled in a travel lane, prompting the driver of a 2012 International 4400 truck, 36-year-old Daniel Steven Mobley of Hopewell, to stop behind the vehicle. Mobley had exited his truck to check on the driver of the Chrysler, 69-year-old Theresa Mae Steed of South Chesterfield, and to report the traffic hazard.
According to state police, the International truck’s emergency warning lights were active when a 2015 GMC Sierra struck the rear of the stationary truck. The driver of the GMC, Justin Michael Johnson of Chesterfield County, died at the scene.
Ongoing Investigation into the Collision
Both Mobley and Steed were reported to be unhurt in the crash. As of the latest update from Virginia State Police, the investigation into the specific circumstances surrounding the impact remains active. The stretch of I-95 near the Route 288 interchange is a high-volume corridor, and incidents involving stationary or disabled vehicles in travel lanes pose significant risks to both motorists and first responders.
