The older brother of a former athlete accusing Alan Jones of indecent assault has testified in the New South Wales Local Court that the complainant admitted he stayed silent about the alleged abuse because he did not want financial and material support to stop, according to abc.net.au. The witness, who is the first of more than 70 witnesses called by the Crown aside from the alleged victims, told prosecutor Georgina Wright SC that he first met Mr Jones in 2003 after driving his younger brother, known as Complainant J, to the 2GB studios because the broadcaster was interested in the teenager’s emerging sporting career. During testimony, the witness recalled that Mr Jones provided Complainant J with a car, a mobile phone, and weekly payments ranging from $400 to $600 to help with his athletic training.

The witness recounted a meeting with his younger brother at a fast-food restaurant shortly after seeing news media reports of Mr Jones’s arrest. According to The Guardian, the witness stated that Complainant J told him, This is the hardest thing that I’ve ever had to tell you. You’ve probably seen the news about the defendant. I’m one of the people who have come forward.

When the witness asked how bad the alleged incidents were, Complainant J reportedly replied, Nothing too bad, he didn’t try to fk me or anything like that, he would try, he would grab me on the ck, he would kiss me, as detailed by News.com.au. The brother testified that when he asked why nothing had been reported decades earlier, Complainant J explained that he found it hard and did not want the money and support to stop.

Under cross-examination by defence barrister Gabrielle Bashir SC, the witness confirmed that Complainant J had never told him he was frightened of Mr Jones or that he was trying to avoid the broadcaster.

Gifts and Family Connections Explored

The court heard testimony regarding several interactions between the witness, his brother, and Mr Jones during the early 2000s. The witness stated he visited Mr Jones’s Macquarie Street apartment, his broadcaster studios, and his Fitzroy Falls farmstay on different occasions. He told the Crown prosecutor that he never personally saw Mr Jones act inappropriately towards his younger brother.

The witness also testified about personal assistance offered by the broadcaster. According to evidence presented in court, Mr Jones offered to help the witness buy an engagement ring for his then-fiancee and subsequently gifted the couple a Villeroy and Boch dinner set as a wedding present. Complainant J previously completed his evidence in the criminal proceedings, while the trial involving multiple complainants and dozens of scheduled witnesses continues.
