Porirua Water Pipe Burst Triggers Closures and Eight-Hour Outage

A 300mm water main burst on Mepham Place in Porirua on Saturday afternoon, causing asphalt to crack and triggering service interruptions expected to last at least eight hours. The incident forced multiple central city community facilities, businesses, and public buildings to close.

Burst Main on Mepham Place Disrupts Central Porirua

A major infrastructure failure struck central Porirua when a burst 300mm main on Mepham Pl ruptured the roadway, causing the asphalt to crack. The incident occurred at approximately 2.20pm on Saturday, according to local reporting anchored by RNZ, while municipal management teams pinned the exact response time by Tiaki Wai to 2.21pm.

The rupture immediately cut off water supplies across the city centre, Rānui, and Elsdon. Local authorities mobilized emergency teams to secure the site, though excavation could not start immediately.

Civic Closures and Mayor Anita Baker’s Warning

As water pressure dropped across the affected zone, city leaders warned residents to prepare for an extended interruption.

The loss of municipal water forced the Porirua City Council to shut down key public facilities. The closures affected popular spots such as the Porirua Library, Pātaka Art + Museum, CBD public toilets, Te Rauparaha Arena and Aquatic Centre, and Café Kaizen.

Outage Boundaries and Emergency Water Tanks

While initial reports pointed to a widespread regional disruption, monitoring teams narrowed the primary impact zone as repairs progressed. Tiaki Wai confirmed that the outages were strictly contained to numbers 1 through 16 on Champion Street alongside the entirety of Mepham Place.

To assist impacted locals during the dry hours, a water tanker had been ordered and positioned on the corner of Champion Street and Mepham Place.

Night Repairs and Expected Restoration Timeline

Repair crews worked through Saturday night on Mepham Place to mend the fractured 300mm pipe. Municipal operators anticipated that normal water service would resume from 10.30pm onward, meeting the preliminary eight-hour disruption window outlined earlier in the afternoon by civic leaders.
