A 64-year-old woman appeared in Napier District Court facing a manslaughter charge following the February drowning of a 5-year-old boy at Westshore Beach. Police confirmed the decision to prosecute wasn’t taken lightly after an extensive and careful investigation.
The February Discovery at Westshore Beach
Emergency services rushed to Westshore Beach in Napier on the evening of February 5 after reports of a body in the water came in around 8:30 p.m. The child had disappeared in the Westshore area sometime between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., according to Hawke’s Bay Crime Squad Detective Sergeant Ryan Kemsley’s statements during the initial search.
A large late-night search operation involving police, the Coastguard, and Surf Life Saving combed the shoreline and surrounding waters. The recovery effort concluded in the early hours of February 6, when the five-year-old boy’s body was located and pulled from the water. Authorities subsequently issued public appeals asking anyone who might have spotted an unattended child on the beach that evening to come forward.
Court Appearance and Legal Status
Court registry records confirmed that Whare did not seek name suppression when she made her first appearance in Napier District Court.
Following her initial court date on Wednesday, Whare was remanded to appear next in the High Court on October 16.
Police Investigation and Community Impact
Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the child’s disappearance and subsequent drowning. Detective Sergeant Kate Hyde noted that police carried out an extensive review before advancing criminal charges.
