Heathrow Airport train services faced severe disruption following a trackside grass fire that caused a failure of the electricity supply and blocked lines between London Paddington, Reading, and the airport terminals on Saturday.

Trackside Fire and Electricity Supply Failure Halts Heathrow Links

Trains to and from Heathrow Airport ground to a halt after a trackside grass fire triggered major travel chaos across London. National Rail reported that major disruption was expected following the incident, which began shortly after 16:00 BST on Saturday.

All lines between London Paddington station, Heathrow terminals, and Reading were blocked due to a failure of the electricity supply caused by a fire next to the track, according to official statements. Stranded passengers faced heavy delays, with social media images capturing crowded platforms at Paddington, one of the capital’s main rail hubs.

London Fire Brigade and Emergency Response Operations

The London Fire Brigade deployed six fire engines and around 40 crew members to tackle the blaze near Scrubs Lane, North Kensington. While Network Rail Western confirmed late on Saturday that the fire had been extinguished, officials warned that lingering delays would continue into Sunday morning for some services, caused by trains being displaced by the disruption.

The rail stoppage compounded an already difficult travel day at the airport. Hours before the trackside fire blocked rail links, a separate grass fire on Heathrow’s airfield shut down the southern runway, causing at least two flights diverted elsewhere. Heathrow apologised for any disruption and said the fire was extinguished quickly, noting that the incident followed a previous grass fire near the southern runway weeks prior which forced 18 flights to divert and destroyed a large area of grassland.

Met Office Fire Severity Warnings Across South-East England

Although weather has cooled across much of the UK in recent days following record-breaking heat over the summer, fire crews have still been warning of wildfire risks. The Met Office’s Fire Severity Index shows that if a wildfire was to occur, it would have a “highfire severity in most of south-east England and some of the Midlands. Furthermore, the fire severity isexceptional,” the highest level on the index, in some parts of London including Heathrow, as well as on the Essex and Suffolk coasts.

Great Western Railway cancelled its services to Reading, and no Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express services were running between Paddington and Heathrow on Saturday night. Passengers seeking alternatives were advised by the airport to leave extra time for their journeys, as the Piccadilly line running services to the airport also experienced delays.

Tunnel Closures and Subsequent Weekday Travel Adjustments

Transport for London (TfL) reported no service between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow terminals and severe delays on the lines to Paddington throughout Monday due to a tunnel being closed for safety reasons. National Rail reported that the tunnel closure meant fewer trains were able to run, with Heathrow Express running a reduced service and major disruption expected to last until the end of the day.

Commuters seeking to avoid Elizabeth line disruptions were provided alternative travel options. Passengers were advised they could use the Piccadilly line to travel to all Heathrow terminals, utilize London Overground services with an interchange at stations such as Stratford, Liverpool Street, Clapham Junction, or Shepherd’s Bush, or take local buses. Specific alternative routes included taking the 105 bus from Southall, the SL9 or 278 bus from Hayes and Harlington, the 350 bus from Hayes and Harlington or West Drayton for Terminal 5, the 482 bus from Southall for Terminals 4 and 5, or using the free shuttle service at Heathrow Airport for Terminals 4 and 5.
