Sophia Dunkley struck a run-a-ball 119 to lead England to a comprehensive 114-run victory over Ireland in Worcester on Sunday, sealing a 3-0 one-day international series clean sweep as Charlie Dean’s side closed out their international summer.

Opening batter Sophia Dunkley anchored England’s innings with a sparkling 119 off 119 balls at Worcester, marking her second international century in ODI cricket and her second in four years after 100 runs from 100 balls against Ireland. Dunkley cracked 15 boundaries in her sublime knock, having been inserted by the visitors after losing the toss. Dunkley added 73 runs for the first wicket alongside Maia Bouchier, who continued her fine run of form with 39 runs before falling to a leading edge forced by Kia McCartney and being caught. The innings gained further momentum through a dominant second-wicket century partnership as Dunkley dominated alongside Jodi Grewcock, who chipped in with 35 runs before being caught and bowled.

England were eyeing a record total before the innings fell away from 260-4 in the 43rd over, eventually being bowled out short of their allotted 50 overs with 291 all out after 48.5 overs, leaving seven balls unused. Alice Capsey was unlucky to be run out backing up for 10, and Dunkley eventually holed out in the deep during the 36th over. All-rounders Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp provided a brief recovery with a 46-run partnership for the fifth wicket, but the hosts lost their last six wickets for just 31 runs in the space of little more than six overs. Gibson pushed on to an ODI-best 41 off 37 balls, while Kemp added 23 off 21 before it was the former’s wicket that kickstarted the collapse as she was caught at long-on, courtesy of a terrific catch on the long-off boundary by Ireland captain Gaby Lewis.

Cara Murray Leads Ireland Fightback as England Collapse

Leg-spinner Cara Murray orchestrated Ireland’s late bowling resurgence by claiming a career-first four-for with figures of 4-56 as the visitors fought back admirably. Despite conceding runs early, Murray and the visiting attack capitalized on England’s lower-order slide, restricting the hosts to manage only seven boundaries to hit after Dunkley’s departure in the 36th over.

Despite the disappointing end to the innings, England still had plenty on the board in another non-contest between bat and ball as Ireland never truly threatened in reply. Lauren Filer dismissed Lewis early on in the Ireland reply, before Alice Tector (29) and Amy Hunter (39) laid the foundations with a 56-second-wicket stand, though they did so too slowly. The tourists began to fall behind the required rate, as no Irish batter was able to score at a strike-rate above 100 and the run-rate spiralled beyond their grasp.

Rookie wicketkeeper Alice Capsey showed she is learning fast by taking two stumpings to continue her successful wicketkeeping audition in this series, first when Tilly Corteen-Coleman bowled Tector, and then claiming stumpings off Hunter and Rebecca Stokell (14). Orla Prendergast was caught at deep midwicket off Corteen-Coleman, who then cleaned up another batter in Louise Little (14) as Ireland lost their last five wickets for 10 runs in under four overs. Filer finished off the job by dismantling Kia McCartney’s stumps, sealing Ireland’s dismissal for 177 in 44.2 overs. Filer finished with 3-27, Mady Villiers took 3-33, and Corteen-Coleman claimed 2-34 to skittle Ireland and secure the series whitewash.

Reflecting on the milestone and the team’s performance, Player of the Series and Player of the Match Sophia Dunkley said: “It was just great to get the series win today. It was definitely tricky at the start. The longer you batted the easier it got. It was nice to get through that period and see us home. For me, it is just about staying really present. I love batting for whatever team I am playing for and it is great to be at the top of the order again in ODI cricket. It is definitely my goal to be at the top of the order in all formats.”

The final match of the series concludes England’s international summer. Their next confirmed games will come at the Champions Trophy in February, though a multi-format series against West Indies in the autumn and three ODIs against Sri Lanka are in the schedule, but the dates have not been released.
