AANEM Offers $100,000 Grants for Neuromuscular Research

The American Neuromuscular Foundation has announced a new funding opportunity for researchers focused on muscle and nerve disorders, offering a $100,000 grant to support early-career scientific breakthroughs. This financial commitment, spanning a two-year period, aims to provide the necessary capital for promising investigators to launch original research in fields covered by the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM).

Meeting Application Deadlines

The application process operates on a strict timeline, requiring potential applicants to coordinate through the University at Albany’s Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations. Researchers interested in pursuing this funding must submit their Letter of Intent (LOI) worksheets by November 27, 2026. This initial step is a prerequisite for those hoping to be invited to submit a full project proposal, which would subsequently be managed by the university’s Sponsored Programs Administration.

The foundation has set a final deadline for all application materials on December 4, 2026. To facilitate the process, the university has directed interested parties to contact [email protected] to obtain the specific LOI worksheet and further administrative details.

Eligibility and Scope of Research

This grant is specifically designed for researchers who are in the early stages of their careers or those transitioning into independent investigation. To qualify, an applicant must hold an MD, PhD, DSc, or an equivalent degree and be part of a research team at a qualified institution. The foundation requires that candidates have completed at least 18 months of post-degree research laboratory training at the time of application.

For those holding a PhD or DSc, the applicant must currently be engaged in a post-doctoral fellowship or be within 60 months of receiving their degree. MD or DO applicants must be currently enrolled in a residency or fellowship, or have completed such training within the last 60 months. Beyond these credentials, the research plan must focus on a specific muscle or nerve disease recognized by the AANEM.

Receiving Grant Benefits

The grant provides more than just the $100,000 in seed money. Successful applicants will receive a complimentary membership to the AANEM and a subscription to the journal Muscle & Nerve for the entire duration of their project. Furthermore, the award includes complimentary registration for the AANEM Annual Meeting during the year the research is presented, along with a $1,500 travel award to cover the costs of attending the conference.

Research grant announcement

In addition to this opportunity for emerging scientists, the foundation maintains a separate Neuromuscular Research Grant. This second funding stream is earmarked for mid-career or established researchers tackling high-risk, high-reward projects related to muscle and nerve disorders. Like the primary grant, this award provides $100,000 over two years, ensuring that established investigators also have a pathway to secure funding for complex, specialized studies.

The dual nature of these grants reflects a broader effort to sustain the pipeline of neurological research, balancing the need for fresh perspectives from new investigators with the deep, technical expertise of established professionals. Interested researchers can find the official LOI guidelines and further details through the University at Albany.
