An Ames man faces an attempted murder charge after a Tuesday evening stabbing at a west Ames grocery store left a woman with severe neck injuries, according to an Ames Police Department news release covered by the Iowa State Daily.
Officers rushed to the Hy-Vee location at 3800 Lincoln Way at 8:06 p.m. Tuesday following reports of the attack. Upon arrival, responding officers discovered an adult female victim suffering from lacerations to her neck. Emergency radio traffic indicated that the woman was conscious and breathing when an Ames Fire Department rescue crew reached the scene, managing to control her bleeding before paramedics transported her to a Des Moines-area hospital for advanced medical care.
Police quickly secured the immediate area. Officers located a suspect sitting in a vehicle parked near the grocery store and took him into custody without further incident. Investigators identified him as 21-year-old Timothy Cooke of Ames.
Cooke was formally charged with attempt to commit murder, which is classified as a class B felony under Iowa law. He was subsequently booked into the Story County Jail.
Authorities have not yet released the identity or the current medical condition of the victim, citing the ongoing nature of the criminal investigation. Investigators are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Ames Police Department at 515-239-5133, use the anonymous tip line at 515-239-5533, or reach out to Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa at 515-223-1400.
Under the American judicial system, a criminal charge represents an accusation rather than a conviction. Cooke remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
