Apple Unveils iPhone Duo Foldable Starting at $1,999

Apple introduces its first book-style foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, starting at $1,999 for 256GB and carrying an $800 premium over the base iPhone 18 Pro, while requiring mandatory app screenshot updates for developers by April 2027.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for a 256GB model, scaling up to $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and topping out at $3,199 for 2TB, according to detailed pricing and comparison specifications. That entry price sits $800 higher than the base model iPhone 18 Pro, which starts at $1,199 for 256GB.

Duo Features Dual OLED Displays with Folding Interior

Unlike traditional slab-style phones, the Duo relies on a dual-display configuration. The cover screen measures 5.4 inches, featuring a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 2,034-by-1,398-pixel resolution and a density of 460ppi. When opened, it reveals a 7.6-inch folding interior panel running at a 2,670-by-1,878-pixel resolution at 430ppi, complete with a nano-textured anti-reflective finish designed to minimize glare and crease visibility.

Closed, the Duo measures 4.64 by 3.31 by 0.44 inches, expanding to twice that width at 4.64 by 6.48 by 0.20 inches when open. Both screens, alongside the traditional iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, support 120Hz ProMotion adaptive refresh rates, Always-On display technology, and outdoor peak brightness reaching 3,000 nits.

A20 Pro Chip Powers Duo and Pro Models

Beneath the glass, Apple has maintained hardware parity across its top-tier releases. The Duo, the 18 Pro, and the Pro Max all run on the 2nm Apple A20 Pro chip, which features a six-core CPU, a seven-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple pairs this silicon with an undisclosed RAM configuration expected to reach 12GB.

Connectivity features are similarly unified. All three models incorporate Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip, Thread connectivity, Ultra-Wideband, and Emergency Satellite features. For cellular connections, the Duo and the standard 18 Pro utilize an integrated C2 5G cellular modem, whereas the larger Pro Max houses a Qualcomm X80 modem.

Reviewing Camera System Trade-offs and Missing Features

While the traditional Pro models feature a triple 48-megapixel camera system complete with a variable aperture and 4x optical zoom, the Duo relies on a dual 48-megapixel camera layout. The device includes a main fusion camera and an ultrawide shooter, but omits a dedicated telephoto lens to keep the hardware relatively thin. Professional capture tools like ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2 recording are absent from the folding model.

The Duo ditches FaceID and Action Button configurations entirely, forcing users to authenticate via a TouchID fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button. Furthermore, the interior folding screen houses an under-display FaceTime camera behind a layer of pixels.

App Store Requires Duo Screenshots by April 2027

Pre-orders open soon, with the device scheduled to go on sale Friday, Oct. 23, entering a mature market where Android competitors like Samsung and Google have spent years refining book-style foldables.

This updated requirement ensures that all available software is properly optimized for the new display before the device becomes a standard part of the mobile ecosystem.
