Athenahealth Patient Portal Allows Users to Manage Medical Bills

Patients using the athenahealth Patient Portal can now manage their medical finances and view account balances through a dedicated digital interface, according to information provided by the service provider.

The portal offers an online billing feature that allows users to track their financial obligations to their healthcare practices. While the availability of specific billing tools remains at the discretion of individual medical practices, the system is designed to centralize several administrative tasks.

Users can access their current account balance in the Billing tab. Under the “Recent Charges Payable Online” section, the portal lists charges organized by the date of the visit.

The system facilitates direct electronic payments for these charges. To make a payment, patients click the “Make a Payment” button, select their desired charge amount, and enter credit card information to complete the transaction.

For those who prefer to keep their information on file for quicker future transactions, the portal includes management tools for saved payment methods. Patients can add a new credit or debit card, designate a specific card as their default, or delete existing cards from the system.

The digital platform also serves as a repository for financial documentation. Patients can view their full payment history by selecting the Payments option within the Billing tab, where they can click a “View detail” link for specific transactions.

Official account statements are also accessible through the portal. By selecting “Statements” in the Billing section, patients can view and review their individual statements via a “View detail” link.

Technical requirements for accessing these financial documents are specific. The portal requires Adobe Acrobat to view or print both medical forms and billing statements. A link to download this software is provided on the portal for users who do not already have it installed.

If a patient has a question regarding a specific balance or a charge, the portal provides a messaging system. Users can select “Compose Message,” choose the “Billing and Payments” option from the dropdown menu, and send a direct inquiry to their provider’s office.

Security protocols are integrated into the billing and data management process. All communications and data transmissions between the patient and the provider’s office are carried over a secure, encrypted connection using industry-standard Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption.

To maintain account integrity, the portal utilizes server-side digital certificate authentication and stores medical information behind a firewall within an electronic medical record system. The system also includes an automatic sign-out feature that triggers after 10 minutes of keyboard inactivity to prevent unauthorized access.

Users are advised not to access their sensitive health or billing information on public computers. The portal also requires users to ensure their email address on file is accurate, as all system notifications are sent to that specific address.
