State Farm Arena Tipoff Moved to Thursday Afternoon
Game 6 of the 2026 WNBA Finals between the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries is scheduled for Thursday at 12:30 p.m. ET at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, moved from its original 8 p.m. start time.
The league shifted the schedule to accommodate an NBA game featuring the Atlanta Hawks later that same evening. That venue conflict triggered sharp pushback from the Dream organization.
Ownership Group Questions League’s Assumptions
In an open letter to fans, the Atlanta Dream ownership group revealed they flagged potential scheduling overlaps with NBA fixtures at State Farm Arena two months prior. Those early warnings failed to generate urgency from league officials.
“Perhaps it was assumed that the Dream would not make it this far. Perhaps our place in the Finals was not accounted for,” the owners wrote. “Whatever the reason, the reality is that we are here.”
The franchise commended the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena management for altering their own calendars three times to clear space for the Finals series. Yet, the midday reality remains a friction point.
The owners stated that playing a midday game on a Thursday is not what they would have chosen and not what they fought for.
The unusual timing caught the attention of cultural figures outside the sports world. Rapper Flavor Flav proposed turning Thursday into a paid holiday, drafting a mock letter urging employers to give their staff time off to tune in. Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton backed the idea publicly on social media, writing simply that she endorsed the message.
