Atlanta Opera Announces 2026-27 Season Opening With Silent Night

The Atlanta Opera’s 2026–27 season opens with the return of Kevin Puts’s Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Silent Night, marking its first performance in Atlanta in ten years. The season, themed “An Odyssey,” explores the pursuit of ideals through conflict, with the fall productions inspired by the company’s Veteran’s Program and focusing on the story of the 1914 Christmas truce.

The mainstage season begins with Silent Night, a co-production with Wexford Festival and Glimmerglass, which tells the story of enemy soldiers declaring a cease-fire during World War I to recognize their common humanity (Nov 7–15). The same narrative will be presented in December as part of the Molly Blank Discoveries Series with Peter Rothstein’s a cappella musical All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914, featuring 20 performances in a co-production with Atlanta’s Theatrical Outfit at the Balzer Theater (Dec 2–27).

2026–27 Season Highlights

The Atlanta Opera’s 47th season spans seven productions across multiple genres and venues. Subsequent to the fall productions with a war theme, the mainstage schedule proceeds with Bizet’s Carmen, under the direction of Brenna Corner and featuring Rihab Chaieb in the lead role (Jan 30–Feb 7); Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, starring three-time Grammy winner Ryan Speedo Green as the Dutchman and Wendy Bryn Harmer as Senta (March 13–21); and Puccini’s Tosca, which stars Monica Conesa in the title role (May 1–9).

Discoveries Series and NOW Festival

The Molly Blank Discoveries Series presents All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 in December, offering a different interpretation of the same story featured in Silent Night. In June 2027, the NOW Festival at Morehouse College’s Ray Charles Performing Arts Center will include Jubilee, a tribute to the Fisk Jubilee Singers by Tazewell Thompson and Dianne Adams McDowell (June 5, 6, 10), and Rosenbaum and Li, the winner of the 2025 96-Hour Opera Project (June 11 & 13).

Final Season Before Relocation

This season demonstrates The Atlanta Opera’s dedication to broadening the scope of opera and signifies the company’s last season prior to relocating to the Molly Blank Center for Opera and the Arts. The juxtaposition of Silent Night and All is Calm highlights the company’s dedication to exploring historical moments of humanity through diverse artistic lenses.
