The Cost Reality of Assisted Living in Rhode Island
When families start looking into long-term care options across the Ocean State, the sticker shock usually sets in early. According to a SeniorAdvice guide drawing on the Genworth Cost of Care survey, the average monthly cost for assisted living in Rhode Island sits at $5,199. That figure runs considerably higher than the national average of $4,051, pushing annual expenses for families to roughly $63,900.
Monthly expenses across the state generally range between $4,000 and $6,000, depending heavily on the specific municipality, facility amenities, and the tier of medical attention required. For retirees needing more intensive support, nursing home costs escalate sharply to an average of $103,113 per year.
Weighing Expenses Against Regional Demographics
These steep price tags land against a unique demographic backdrop. U.S. Census Bureau data shows Rhode Island’s population has remained remarkably steady since 2010, ticking up by just 5,000 residents over a nine-year stretch. Yet, the state carries a senior population of 17.2 percent, outpacing the national average of 15.6 percent. SeniorAdvice notes that while the state scores a 71 percent on its SeniorScore metric—just one point shy of the national average of 72 percent—many residents aged 65 and over struggle to absorb the high cost of living.
Property taxes compound the financial pressure on fixed-income households. Property taxes average 4.71 percent of total income in Rhode Island, sitting significantly higher than the national average of 2.79 percent. On top of that, property taxes average 1.27 percent of property value, compared to the 1.09 percent national norm.
Rhode Island Facilities Provide Senior Care Near Hospitals
Despite the financial hurdles, Rhode Island features a dense network of senior care options due to its compact geography. Facilities like Atria Harborhill in East Greenwich provide independent living, assisted living, and memory care, backed by 24-hour supervision. Located near Greenwich Bay at 159 Division Street, the facility places residents close to Kent County Memorial Hospital just three miles away and University Orthopedics a short 1.2 miles down the road.
Other locations across the state offer similar localized access. All American Assisted Living at Warwick, located at 55 Toll Gate Hill Farm Road in Kent County, houses up to 47 older adults and features a 24-hour security system.
State oversight remains a critical factor for families evaluating these choices. The Rhode Island Department of Health handles the licensing and regulation of assisted living homes to maintain safety standards.
