Avalanche Overwhelm Devils With Four Third-Period Goals in 5-2 Victory

The Colorado Avalanche erupted for four goals in the third period on Wednesday night at Ball Arena, surging past the New Jersey Devils for a 5-2 victory that snapped New Jersey’s four-game winning streak. According to NHL.com, the Devils (8-5-0) had won four straight entering the contest, including a 5-1 victory against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday, but ultimately ran out of momentum on the second half of a back-to-back.

Colorado dominated the shot metrics throughout the evening, outshooting New Jersey 44-22 overall. As Colorado Hockey Now reported, the Avalanche held a staggering 21-6 advantage in shots during the second period alone, wearing down a fatigued Devils squad that had held a 1-1 tie through forty minutes.

Breaking Open a Tight Game

The game turned early in the final frame when Nazem Kadri and Parker Kelly scored in a 1:02 span. Kadri broke the tie at 2:45 of the third period to give Colorado a 2-1 lead, and Kelly followed quickly at 3:47, beating goaltender Jake Allen short-side after carrying the puck into the offensive zone. Nathan MacKinnon added his eighth goal of the season at the 12-minute mark, picking up speed through the neutral zone, going around the two Devils defenders and depositing the puck past Allen to make it 4-1. Jaden Schwartz added another goal just 30 seconds later to put the game firmly out of reach.

“They had more energy and on top of that, we’re on a back-to-back, so credit to them. They did a really good job,” Connor Brown said, via NHL.com. Brown had opened the scoring for New Jersey in the first period with a shorthanded goal at 12:21, intercepting a centering pass from MacKinnon and capitalizing when the puck caromed off Cale Makar’s skate and through goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood’s pads.

Coaching Perspectives and Special Teams Battle

New Jersey head coach Sheldon Keefe noted the heavy workload faced by his goaltender, who stopped 39 shots. “Obviously, starts with Jake Allen, who had a ton of work coming towards him. But I thought our guys battled real hard, which is why you know we led most of the game and gave ourselves a chance to compete for points in the third period,” Keefe told NHL.com. “Obviously, the dam broke on us, but not a lack of fight or compete from our guys here today.”

Colorado weathered a late second-period penalty kill that included a brief five-on-three advantage for New Jersey after penalties to Logan O’Connor and Brent Burns. Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar praised his team’s defensive structure despite surrendering the early shorthanded goal, pointing to balanced contributions across the lineup as the team improved to 7-5-1 on the season.

Next Steps on the Schedule

The Devils travel to face the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday night, while the Avalanche return home to host the Calgary Flames on Saturday night.
