Avon Unveils George Springer III Field for Spring 2027

A Gift That Will Define Avon Baseball’s Next Century

On November 5, 2026, Avon Old Farms School reported a landmark gift poised to reshape the future of its baseball program for generations. A new synthetic turf field, to be named George Springer III Field, is on its way, thanks to a transformative donation from two of the school’s most accomplished alumni: George Springer ’08 and Austin Sperry ’96, P’29. The timing is electric, arriving just as the Avon baseball team, the Winged Beavers, captured its 35th Founders League Championship this past spring and Head Coach Rob Dowling ’91, P’22 was named both the 2026 Founders League Coach of the Year and recipient of the League’s M.D. Nadal Sportsmanship Award. This isn’t just a new field; it’s a statement of belief in the power of an Avon education and athletics.

More Than a Game: The Human and Economic Stakes

At its core, this gift is about unlocking potential in a place where weather has long been the ultimate opponent. New England springs are notoriously fickle, a reality that has historically shortened outdoor practice and competition seasons. Coach Dowling put it perfectly: “The new turf field will extend our outdoor season by weeks, providing our players more time on the field despite New England’s unpredictable weather.” This practical benefit translates directly into tangible outcomes for student-athletes. More time on a championship-caliber field means more repetitions, better skill development, stronger team chemistry, and more memories forged.

The project itself is a comprehensive overhaul, not just a simple replacement of the grass. According to the school’s announcement, the new facility will feature a modern synthetic turf playing field, larger and more functional dugouts, dedicated bullpens and batting cages for both teams, spectator bleachers, a press box for game-day operations, a new scoreboard, and updated fencing and netting throughout.

“This is a remarkable investment in the future of Avon baseball and, most importantly, in our student-athletes,” said Coach Dowling. “The new turf field will extend our outdoor season by weeks, providing our players more time on the field despite New England’s unpredictable weather. George and Austin’s generosity will give our players a first-class field on which to compete, develop, and build the relationships and memories that make athletics such an important part of the Avon experience.”

A Legacy of Excellence, Giving Back

The naming of the field carries a deep and personal significance for the Avon community. George Springer, a 2008 alumnus, is not just a benefactor but a living embodiment of the school’s values. As a four-time MLB All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and the 2017 World Series MVP with the Houston Astros, his on-field achievements are legendary. Off the field, he has remained a steadfast ambassador for the game and his community. George Springer III Field will pay tribute to his accomplishments and the lasting bond he shares with the community that was instrumental in his development. Dowling, who coached Springer since he arrived at Avon in 2004, offered a powerful reflection on the man behind the donation.

Coach Dowling reflected, “Having coached George since he first became part of the Avon Old Farms family in 2004, watching his journey has been an absolute privilege. This incredible gift speaks to who George is at his core — a person of exceptional character and relentless effort. George’s generosity ensures that future generations of Winged Beavers will learn those same lessons of hard work and dedication on a championship-caliber field.” This personal connection elevates the gift from a simple financial transaction to a mentorship passed down through generations.

Austin Sperry ’96 brings his own formidable legacy to the table. As a member of the school’s Board of Directors, Sperry represented the United States as a Star class sailor at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has continued to rank among the sport’s elite competitors, having most recently claimed the 2024 Star World Championship title. His discipline and drive in a demanding, individual sport mirror the very values that define Avon athletics. Together, the contributions of Springer and Sperry create a new facility where student-athletes can compete and develop, reflecting their commitment to Avon.

What It Means for Avon’s Next Hundred Years

This generous gift does more than just build a field; it serves as a cornerstone for Avon Old Farms School’s Centennial Campaign, an ambitious initiative dedicated to shaping the institution’s next century. The field becomes a tangible symbol of the campaign’s goal: to provide future generations with the resources they need to develop the character and drive that define an Avon education.

Jim Detora P’12, Head of School, stated, “George and Austin’s commitment reflects their deep belief in Avon and in the lasting power of an Avon education. We are profoundly grateful to them for choosing to support Avon in such a meaningful and enduring way.” For Detora and the Avon community, athletics are not a separate entity from education but an integral part of it, a place where young men learn lessons in teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship that are as crucial as those learned in the classroom.

The practical timeline for this transformation is already in motion. Based on the current construction schedule, Avon anticipates the new playing field will be ready in time for the spring 2027 baseball season. And for the entire Avon community, it’s a field that will carry the lessons and spirit of George Springer and Austin Sperry and the generations of players who will follow them.
