Azteca Mexican Restaurant Opens Doors on Broadway in South Portland
South Portland’s dining scene has a fresh addition as Azteca Mexican Restaurant officially launched at 1422 Broadway on Thursday, October 22, 2026, bringing established local restaurateurs back to a brick-and-mortar storefront.
The 36-seat restaurant occupies a space familiar to local diners. The building was previously home to Caribbean Taste, a Jamaican restaurant, and has also housed Mainely Wraps as well as Willows Pizza and Restaurant over the years, Q97.9 reported. Behind the new venture are co-owners Jamie Rodriguez and Karina Contreras.
From Food Truck Origins to a Permanent Broadway Home
For Rodriguez and Contreras, opening Azteca marks the next chapter in a local culinary journey that began years ago. According to a Facebook post from South Portland Economic Development cited by Q97.9, the pair originally launched a food truck named Tacos La Poblanita back in 2019.
Building on the truck’s popularity, they expanded in 2022 to open a food court spot inside the Maine Mall, where Tacos La Poblanita continues to operate. They later opened a brick-and-mortar version of Tacos La Poblanita in Westbrook, though that location closed last year. Rodriguez noted that returning to a full restaurant setting had remained a long-held goal.
Menu Offerings and Operating Hours
Azteca’s menu features a range of traditional Mexican dishes. According to details shared on the restaurant’s Instagram page and highlighted by Q97.9, patrons can order carne asada, enchiladas verdes and rojas, tamales, burritos, tacos, and huaraches, alongside desserts such as churros and tres leches cake.
The establishment also includes a bar serving beer alongside Mexican-style cocktails like margaritas, micheladas, and mojitos. Operating hours are set for Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with extended hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday closing at 8:30 p.m. The restaurant remains closed on Tuesdays.
