Baltimore County Weighs $210 Million Tax Break for Anduril Shipyard

A $210 Million Tax Break on the Table

Baltimore County is poised to hand a defense contractor a massive personal property tax break of up to $210 million over 30 years, drawing sharp community pushback just days before a scheduled council vote, WYPR reported. The deal would pave the way for Anduril Industries to construct a major shipyard at Tradepoint Atlantic in Sparrows Point.

Fast Rollout Backed by Political Heavyweights

The project rollout has moved quickly, bolstered by a site visit from President Trump, support from Gov. Wes Moore, and local business leaders who point to a projected 3,100 direct jobs. Yet at a Tuesday afternoon county council hearing, residents voiced fierce opposition to investing public funds in military manufacturing.

Residents Clash With Leaders Over Military Spending

“This is not an investment in the people,” Alexandria Sweeney told the council, as reported by WYPR. “It is an investment in wars which cause our gas and food prices to skyrocket. It is an investment in death abroad rather than infrastructure and public services at home.”

Another resident, Sarah Nove, also spoke out against the incentive package. She told local lawmakers that the community does not need to build an industry that relies on and supports wars that America doesn’t want.

Economic Champions See a $3.7 Billion Windfall

Despite the local criticism, supporters vastly outnumbered detractors at the hearing. Mark Anthony Thomas, President and CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee, praised the economic catalyst. Speaking from an economic development conference in New Orleans, Thomas told the council that peers were congratulating Baltimore on securing Anduril’s $3.7 billion investment.

A majority of the county council appears ready to approve the tax break. Council Chairman Mike Ertel called the development exciting, noting the local enthusiasm for the project’s economic footprint.

Anduril to Build Virginia-Class Submarine Components

Tucker Cavanagh, Deputy County Administrative Officer, told the council that construction is expected to move rapidly because the Navy needs the submarine components quickly. Anduril plans to build components for Virginia-class attack nuclear submarines at the Sparrows Point site, with final assembly taking place in shipyards located in Virginia and Connecticut. Hiring for the site is projected to begin in 2029.

During the Arsenal-2 program rollout earlier this month at Tradepoint Atlantic, the company focused on manned submarine components. Anduril later confirmed that the facility will also be positioned to build large-scale autonomous systems in the far off future.

The November 2 Council Vote and Beyond

The Baltimore County Council is scheduled to vote on the personal property tax break for Anduril on Monday, Nov. 2. Following the local decision, the 2027 Maryland General Assembly will consider a separate package of state incentives for the defense contractor.
