“It’s a huge privilege to lead the BBC’s News operation in Northern Ireland and I know how much what we do matters to audiences and the communities we serve,” said Damien Magee.
BBC Northern Ireland has appointed Damien Magee as its Head of News and Current Affairs. Magee, who has served as the interim head of the division since 2025, is now tasked with lead responsibility for the organization’s digital, radio, and television output within the region.
Leadership Transition in Belfast
Magee takes over the position from Kevin Kelly. Kelly stepped down from the substantive role of Head of News and Current Affairs to transition into a new role following his recovery from a period of illness.
Adam Smyth, the Director of BBC Northern Ireland, praised the appointment, noting that Magee possesses more than 30 years of experience in newsrooms. Smyth stated that Magee brings “a wealth of on-the-job knowledge to the role” and will apply “editorial rigour and ambition” to maintain services that are responsive to diversity and audience needs while remaining relevant and trusted.

Career History of Damien Magee
Magee’s tenure with the BBC began in 1989 as a News Trainee. His early career included assignments in London as well as roles in Berlin and Delhi as part of the BBC’s international newsgathering efforts.
After returning to Belfast in 1999, Magee held several leadership positions, including Editor of TV News. He was later named Editor of Daily News Programmes, where he managed radio and television news programming.
Future Objectives
In his new capacity, Magee will oversee the strategic direction of the BBC’s News and Current Affairs services. According to Adam Smyth, the goal is to ensure that locally based news services “remain trusted, relevant and responsive to audience needs and diversity.”
