“We are turning toward the America that we have always wanted to be and have been at brief times in our past,” Bob Harvie told supporters Wednesday night, framing his win as a mandate for unity. ABC News projects Harvie, a Democrat and former school teacher, will defeat incumbent Republican Brian Fitzpatrick in Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District, 6abc.com reported.
A Purple District Flips Blue After a Decade
The projection shows a major change in a suburban Philadelphia district, which has historically voted back and forth between political parties. NBC10 Philadelphia reports that Bucks County’s First Congressional District, often considered a “purple district,” has gone blue for the first time in over a decade.
Fitzpatrick, a former FBI agent, had held the seat since 2016, replacing his Republican brother Mike Fitzpatrick, who represented the area from 2011 when it was still the state’s 8th Congressional District before redistricting. The district had backed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
From Classroom to Congress: Harvie’s Working-Class Platform
Harvie, a former high school social studies teacher who has served on the Bucks County Commissioners since 2020, ran on a platform aimed at working-class economic relief. According to NBC10 Philadelphia, he called for an end to corruption in Washington and said he would “hold greedy corporations accountable to the working class of this country” by pushing for a tax cut for the middle class and ensuring large corporations and the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share. He also campaigned on overturning Citizens United and removing corporate PAC money from politics.

Gas, Groceries, and the Cost of Living
For voters across Bucks County, pocketbook issues dominated the decision. “Gas way too high. Grocery prices way too high,” said Josh Fisher of Newtown. Matthew Fehrle of Newtown echoed the concern: “The cost of living is just not sustainable right now, so we’re hoping something will change.” Regardless of political affiliation, many voters told 6abc.com that the economy was top of mind as they cast their ballots.
Concession at Dawn, Gratitude in Defeat
Fitzpatrick conceded early Wednesday morning. “Tonight is not the ending we had hoped or envisioned,” he said in a statement. Harvie, speaking to supporters after claiming victory, said voters had chosen a path focused on helping one another: “A time when we are with each other, helping each other.”

In his full concession statement, Fitzpatrick reflected on the campaign’s broader impact. “But when I look back on all we have built, the extraordinary coalition of people we have brought together, and the countless people we have come to know as partners, friends, and family, I am overwhelmed not by what is ending, but by all we have been fortunate to experience together,” he said. “I am filled with profound gratitude and pride in knowing that we gave our very best to something we believed in.”
