Boise State QB Maddux Madsen listed as day-to-day after knee injury

Boise State quarterback Maddux Madsen has avoided a serious injury to his left knee and is listed as day-to-day ahead of Saturday’s game at Colorado State, 247sports.com reported.

Head coach Spencer Danielson shared an update during his Monday press conference, noting that the fifth-year senior is in positive spirits and tracking toward a return.

“He’s going to be back here soon,” Danielson said Monday, as reported by 247sports.com. “He’s going to be more day-to-day. Really good to hear that it’s not going to be long term. He’s in really positive spirits. And thank the good Lord that it’s not serious.”

SI.com added that Madsen underwent an MRI after the game that revealed the encouraging news. Danielson voiced concern immediately after Saturday’s contest that Madsen might miss an extended period, but the test results came back better than expected.

Madsen is currently putting together the strongest season of his career, completing 148 of 222 passes for 1,681 yards with 15 touchdowns and just one interception. His steady play has propelled the Broncos to a 7-1 start and a No. 20 ranking in the AP Poll. During the first half against Texas State, Madsen played some of his sharpest football, going 18 of 21 for 202 yards with a touchdown and two rushing scores before the offense stalled in the second half.

If Madsen is unable to take the field this Saturday, fourth-year junior Max Cutforth will get the first-team reps and make his fourth career start for the Broncos. Cutforth stepped in during a dire moment against Texas State, throwing for 131 yards and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to steer the team to a dramatic comeback win. Freshman Cash Herrera would slide into the backup role behind Cutforth if Madsen remains sidelined.

“Hats off to Max,” Danielson said, according to 247sports.com. “Max came in and did a phenomenal job. He came in a dire moment for our team and did a phenomenal job. If Maddux isn’t ready to go this weekend, we have full trust in Max.”

SI.com reported that Cutforth went 2-1 as a starter last November while filling in for Madsen during a three-game absence due to a prior knee injury. Madsen eventually returned for the Mountain West Championship Game and the LA Bowl.

Danielson also remarked on a moment of sportsmanship following the chaotic finish, noting that Texas State quarterback Brad Jackson took time to pray for Madsen after the game.

The Broncos travel to face Colorado State at 4 p.m. Saturday on the USA Network, with a crucial home matchup against Oregon State looming on November 14.
