Manchester City defensive puzzle leaves Enzo Maresca searching for answers at left-back
Back-to-back Premier League defeats have exposed a rare vulnerability in Manchester City, leaving Enzo Maresca with a pressing tactical choice to make ahead of the upcoming fixtures. Following losses to Aston Villa and Brighton, defensive errors and a noticeable lack of synergy on the pitch have stalled City’s momentum. While missed chances up front played a role, the drop-off in individual performances has commanded the most attention in the wake of these results.
Josko Gvardiol has found himself at the center of that scrutiny. Gvardiol has struggled defensively in both matches, failing to cover decisive spaces that ultimately led to opponent goals. Against Aston Villa, Ibrahim Mbaye found room on the right for a cross that resulted in the winning goal before Gvardiol could recover. In the subsequent 1-0 defeat to Brighton at the Etihad Stadium, Gvardiol failed to close down Maxim De Cuyper in the build-up to the decisive strike.
Fatigue catches up to Josko Gvardiol
Neither defensive lapse was catastrophic individually. Instead, they pointed toward a player operating slightly below peak condition. Marc Guehi has experienced a similar performance dip due to fatigue, and Gvardiol appears to be carrying the effects of a demanding workload, compounded by a significant leg injury that forced him to miss a substantial chunk of last season.

Maresca granted Gvardiol a break following the Aston Villa loss, yet the left-back’s struggles persisted against Brighton. The question facing City’s technical staff is whether to continue relying on the defender or rotate him out of the firing line to recover his sharpness.
Nico O’Reilly waits in the wings for a starting role
Fortunately for City, a proven alternative is already in the squad. Nico O’Reilly is fully fit after a back injury disrupted the early stages of his campaign. O’Reilly sustained the issue during the warm-up before City’s 1-0 win over Coventry City, adding to a period of physical recovery following a busy 2025-26 season and a summer campaign with England’s World Cup squad.

That heavy schedule followed a stretch where O’Reilly was arguably Manchester City’s player of the season while playing at left-back. His impressive form earned him a spot in England’s World Cup squad last summer.
Rotating Gvardiol and deploying O'Reilly on the flank
Introducing O’Reilly at left-back would offer a distinct tactical dynamic without sacrificing attacking output. Both players excel in possession and are a goal threat in different ways. Alternatively, Maresca could shift Gvardiol inside to centre-back and insert O’Reilly on the flank. Either configuration gives the manager a viable path to hand Gvardiol a much-needed rest while injecting fresh energy into a backline looking to bounce back from consecutive domestic setbacks.
