NJ Democrats Rally in Springfield to Flip Congressional Seat Ahead of 2026 Midterms

Holding up the American flag patch she wore on her flight uniform for the decade she served as a Navy helicopter pilot, Democratic House candidate Rebecca Bennett delivered a sharp message to a packed community center in Springfield on Monday night: that symbol belongs to all citizens, not to any single political party or to Donald Trump.

With control of Congress hanging in the balance, New Jersey’s top Democrats gathered at the Raymond Chisholm Community Center on Nov. 2, 2026, for an election eve rally. The gathering aimed to energize voters in the district held by two-term Republican Representative Tom Kean Jr., pushing voters to back Bennett in Tuesday’s midterm showdown.

Rallying the Base in Springfield

The room buzzed with the nervous energy typical of the final hours before a major election. Mikie Sherrill, alongside Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim, took the stage to frame the Republican Party as beholden to billionaires and completely disconnected from ordinary working families.

Kim channeled the anxiety of the moment by referencing Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock, telling supporters that he felt “nauseously optimistic” as Election Day arrived.

“We’re hopeful. We’re hopeful, but it’s nerve-wracking, right? Because we know that so much is at stake. So much is at stake,” Kim said. “Right now we do not have three functioning branches of government. We have one branch of government that’s just trying to dominate the other two branches. That’s not the Constitution. That’s not America. That’s not our democracy.”

The Democratic speakers trained their fire squarely on national figures, calling out the financial gains of the Trump administration. Bennett and Sherrill pointed to the reported $2 billion Trump has gained since his second White House term began.

“Has anybody else gained $2 billion in net worth in the last two years? Yeah, I don’t think so,” Bennett told the crowd. She went on to criticize her opponent, pointing to his long tenure in office. “And we have career politicians like Congressman Tom Kean Jr. who have been in office for 25 years, who are doing absolutely nothing to solve the issues that we are facing in this country.”

Harrison Neeley, a spokesman for Representative Kean, did not respond to requests for comment regarding the allegations.

Contrasting Visions on Election Eve

While New Jersey Democrats rallied voters around cost-of-living concerns and democratic norms, President Donald Trump fired back from Washington, D.C., on Monday. Trump accused the Democratic Party of pushing a radical agenda.

“The Democrats want to blow all of this up by electing communist jihadists, and the United States Congress will not allow that to happen. Got some big races tomorrow. I guess some of the voting has already gone on, but tomorrow is Election Day, more traditional, and we can’t let that happen,” Trump said. He acknowledged that some voting had already occurred ahead of Tuesday’s traditional Election Day.

Sherrill emphasized the immediate domestic stakes for working families across the state, telling the audience that everything from household expenses to fundamental rights hung in the balance.

“If you care about working people having a shot in this country, if you care about getting costs down, if you care about protecting people’s rights, if you care about a future for our kids that we can be proud of, every single thing is on the ballot,” Sherrill said.

Sprinting Through the Finish Line

Bennett is considered the surest bet at flipping one of the three congressional seats now held by Republicans in New Jersey. Yet, speaking with reporters before the rally, she maintained a cautious stance.

She was definitely not measuring the drapes before tomorrow night, she noted, stressing the absolute need to sprint through the finish line.

Senator Kim offered a fiery final charge to the crowd, taking direct aim at House leadership and urging supporters to run up the score at the ballot box.

“When I see Speaker Johnson just continuing to allow Donald Trump to do whatever he wants, here’s what I’ll say: On Tuesday, we got to rack up the votes so high for Rebecca and these candidates around the country, I want to make sure none of us have ever had to say after Tuesday the phrase ‘Speaker Johnson’ ever again. Never again!” Kim said.
