Brad Pitt has joined Wim Wenders’ long-in-development documentary From Inside Out — The Architecture of Peter Zumthor as an executive producer. The film, shot over 14 years in 3D, is set to premiere out of competition at the Venice Film Festival next month, highlighting a creative partnership forged during the controversial battle to build the new Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
From Alpine Homes to Los Angeles: A 14-Year Cinematic Build
Filmmaker Wim Wenders has spent the past 14 years documenting the architectural career of Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. The resulting documentary, titled From Inside Out: The Architecture of Peter Zumthor, tracks Zumthor’s work from early residential projects designed in the Alps to the newly completed Los Angeles County Museum of Art building. Like Wenders’ 2023 documentary Anselm, about German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer, the new project was shot in 3D to immerse viewers in spatial designs that define Zumthor’s career.
The feature explores several of Zumthor’s most recognizable structures, including the Therme Vals spa in Switzerland, the Kolumba Museum in Cologne, and the Steilneset Memorial in Norway. It also examines architectural ambitions that did not make it to completion, such as an unsuccessful attempt to design Berlin’s Topography of Terror museum, which producers noted was abandoned after years of development due to significant cost overruns.
Brad Pitt’s Key Advocacy for the New LACMA Design
Brad Pitt’s involvement as an executive producer stems from a longstanding professional relationship and mutual admiration. According to production companies Road Movies and DCM, the film opens with a Brad Pitt presents
credit that reflects the actor’s personal support for the project and his admiration for both Peter Zumthor and Wim Wenders.
Producers clarified that Pitt holds no financial interest in the documentary, and his Plan B production company did not participate in its creation.
Pitt served as a prominent advocate for Zumthor’s ambitious and controversial design for the new Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His intervention, which included delivering remarks at a decisive Los Angeles County hearing in 2019, proved pivotal in helping secure the administrative approvals necessary to get the project moving forward.
Venice Premiere and Global Distribution
International sales for the feature are managed by HanWay, positioning the 3D art documentary for broader global distribution following its festival bow.
