Seven people are recovering in area hospitals after a shooting broke out early Sunday morning in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, an incident that prompted a swift police response and a foot chase through downtown Bloomington. Bloomington Police Department Deputy Chief Ryan Pedigo confirmed in a news release that there are no fatalities, and as of Sunday morning, the department reported that the threat is no longer imminent.
The Sequence of the Sunday Morning Shooting
At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 1, officers from the Bloomington Police Department and the Indiana University Police Department were already patrolling the area near Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street, monitoring a large crowd. According to the Bloomington Police Department, officers heard multiple gunshots and observed a male fleeing the scene on foot. A pursuit ensued, resulting in the suspect’s arrest east of Indiana Avenue near Dunn Meadow. While police located a firearm in the vicinity, officials have not yet confirmed whether that specific weapon was used in the shooting or if other individuals discharged firearms during the disturbance.
This is a mistake. Would love to see the stretch between Dunn and Grant permanently closed and hardscaped to accommodate outdoor dining and pedestrian traffic. https://t.co/hx1ylGsa3s
The incident triggered an emergency response via the Indiana University Notify Alert system. The first alert at 1:31 a.m. warned of shots fired, followed by a status update at 1:43 a.m. confirming that police were actively responding. By 2:09 a.m., the university declared that the threat was no longer imminent, though officials maintained a request for the public to avoid the area while the investigation continued.
A Corridor With a History of Crowd Disturbance
On April 26, a shooting during a late-night street party near campus left people injured. While reports on the exact number of victims in that April incident have varied—with UPI reporting five injured and WFYI citing nine—the event highlighted the volatility of large, late-night crowds in the city’s entertainment district.
Despite the proximity of the two incidents, authorities have cautioned against drawing premature conclusions. Investigators have not yet established any formal link between the April shooting and the events of this past Sunday. Police have not disclosed what triggered the disturbance in the crowd that preceded the gunfire, nor have they finalized the details regarding the total number of shots fired or the specific weapons involved.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Assistance
The Bloomington Police Department, assisted by the Indiana State Police, is currently processing evidence and reviewing potential footage from the scene. Kirkwood Avenue serves as a primary commercial and social hub for both residents and university students.

For those living or working in the area, the immediate priority remains the ongoing police inquiry. The department is actively seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or captured video of the disturbance. Individuals with relevant information are encouraged to contact Detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477 or via email at [email protected].
