Luke Fickell offered no excuses following a 30-0 loss to Iowa on Saturday, describing the shutout performance as an old-fashioned ass-whopping at Kinnick Stadium.
For a brief window, the Badgers had shown signs of stabilizing under Fickell. Winning five of six contests, including a victory over then-No. 16 USC, pushed the program back into the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2023. That momentum vanished entirely in Iowa City, where the team’s offensive and defensive units were thoroughly outplayed across all sixty minutes of regulation.
An Escalating Disparity in the Big Ten
The defeat dropped Fickell’s record against the Hawkeyes to four consecutive losses. Across those four matchups, Iowa holds a staggering 124-16 scoring advantage, having shut out Wisconsin in their last two meetings.
Iowa has scored 81 unanswered points against Wisconsin over the recent stretch, highlighting a persistent physical mismatch between the two conference rivals. Fickell addressed the media immediately following the final whistle.
“Well, that’s an old-fashioned ass whopping,” Fickell said during his postgame press conference. “It doesn’t feel good. … We didn’t play like we were prepared today.”
Searching for Answers After a Complete Breakdown
The visiting sideline failed to generate any sustainable momentum against a disciplined Hawkeyes defense. Fickell acknowledged the total nature of the breakdown, admitting that evaluation of the performance yielded few redeeming qualities.

“I don’t know that I could find any positives in the way we played and performed,” Fickell stated. “It’s very, very, very disappointing. I’m not sitting here saying I got any answers for you, I’m not pointing any fingers at anybody or anything because all three phases of the game we were completely manhandled for 60-plus minutes.”
The program now faces a short week of internal evaluation to correct structural flaws before returning home.
Looking Ahead to November
The Badgers return home on Saturday, Nov. 7, to host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who enter the matchup holding a 2-6 overall record and a 1-4 mark in Big Ten play.
