Byron Donalds elected Florida governor; term lasts four years

History was made Tuesday night in Florida. Republican U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds defeated Democratic candidate David Jolly by a margin of less than 2 percentage points to become the Sunshine State’s first Black governor, floridatoday.com reported. The Associated Press-style call came late, but the significance was immediate: a state that has never before elected a Black chief executive now has one, and his victory speech leaned hard on continuity.

“Gov. DeSantis has done a great job leading Florida these last eight years,” Donalds said. “We are going to make sure that Florida remains the very best state in all of America.”

So how long will he actually be in office? A Florida governor’s term lasts four years, and the state constitution caps the office at two consecutive terms. Donalds’ first term begins in 2027, the next gubernatorial election lands in 2030, and his first term would officially end in 2031 — unless voters send him back for a second.

Four years, two terms — the rule in plain numbers

Florida is one of 22 other states that limit governors to two consecutive four-year terms, according to the reporting from floridatoday.com, ocala.com and yahoo.com, which all drew on the same constitutional framework.

The rest of the map looks different. Arkansas, California, Delaware, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Dakota and Oklahoma limit governors to two terms overall — consecutive or not. Vermont and New Hampshire have no term limits at all, but their terms are only two years. And Virginia stands alone with a one-term limit.

To hold the office at all, a candidate must be at least 30 years old and must have lived in and been a registered voter in Florida for the seven years before running, per the Florida Constitution, Article IV.

Could Ron DeSantis run again? Yes — and the constitution says exactly why

Former Gov. Ron DeSantis hit the wall this year: after two consecutive terms, he was barred from seeking a third in a row. But that is not a lifetime ban.

Because any future DeSantis term would not be consecutive with his previous ones, he could run again once Donalds’ first term is up. The term limit resets the moment a different governor sits in the office.

DeSantis’ own path is a study in Florida legal and political machinery. He holds a law degree from Harvard Law, served as a judge advocate general officer in the U.S. Navy, and worked as a special assistant U.S. attorney in the Middle District of Florida until his discharge in 2010. He then co-founded an LSAT test-prep company, litigated at the Miami firm Holland & Knight, and entered politics in 2012. This spring he met with Donald Trump at Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami, weeks after Trump fired Florida’s former Attorney General Pam Bondi — and Axios reported he was angling for her job. “Ron was begging me to be AG,” Trump allegedly told a confidante, who relayed the remark to Axios. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, a former Trump personal lawyer, was narrowly confirmed by the Senate in August to fill the role.

Who is Byron Donalds, in dated steps

Donalds is 48 and hails from Naples. He attended Florida A&M University before transferring to Florida State University in Tallahassee, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and marketing in 2002. Before politics, he worked in banking, finance and insurance — as a credit analyst, portfolio manager and financial advisor. He has represented Southwest Florida in Congress and ran this year backed by DeSantis, Trump and Florida Sen. Rick Scott. His platform centers on lowering insurance costs, tax and regulatory cuts, school choice, immigration enforcement, public safety and government efficiency. On Oct. 27, 2026, he held a “Defending the Florida Dream Bus Tour” rally at Bumpa’s in Tallahassee, yahoo.com reported.

What comes next on the calendar

Donalds takes office in 2027. If he serves one full four-year term, it ends in 2031; if he wins re-election in 2030, he could serve until 2035. Either way, the 2030 election is the next date that matters — and it is also the earliest moment DeSantis could legally re-enter the governor’s race, since a Donalds term would break the chain of consecutiveness the constitution prohibits.

Whether DeSantis actually returns to Tallahassee, or instead lands in Washington as Attorney General, remains the open question hanging over this transition — one that neither the election result nor the term-limit rules can answer.
