BYU Basketball Dominates Omaha in 108-67 Rout

The BYU men’s basketball team turned a Friday night home game into an offensive clinic, dismantling Omaha 108-67 at the Marriott Center.

With this victory, the No. 25 Cougars moved to 2-0 on the season, showcasing a depth of scoring that kept the Mavericks on their heels from the opening tip.

According to the Daily Herald, the Cougars saw all five starters reach double figures for the second game. The team’s efficiency was striking, as they shot 60% from the field and maintained a suffocating pace that left the visitors without a single fast-break point.

The Numbers Behind the Surge

BYU’s offensive output was fueled by balanced contributions across the roster. Robert Wright III led the charge with 19 points, connecting on 8 of 11 shots, while Tyler Betsey continued his hot start from deep. Betsey finished with 18 points, hitting 6 of 8 from 3-point range, bringing his total to 10 of 14 from distance through just two games.

Collin Chandler matched Betsey’s 18 points, adding four rebounds and five assists to his stat line. Freshman Bruce Branch III contributed 17 points and six rebounds, while Jaxon Kohler added 11 points and seven boards. The Cougars’ ability to distribute the ball was a defining factor, with Brooks Bahr and Chandler each recording five assists.

The game also provided opportunities for development and morale. Brody Kozlowski, who has spent the better part of two seasons sidelined by injury, recorded his first points since January 2025. Late in the contest, freshman Petar Ostojic energized the crowd by sinking a 3-pointer, a moment head coach Kevin Young said improved team chemistry.

“It’s really hard to play a lot of guys. Once you get past nine it gets really hard. There were certain things we wanted to see and we felt like it was a good game to do it. Everyone was smiling when Petar hit that three at the end, but that kid can shoot,” Young said.

Strategic Shifts in Pace

The most lopsided statistic of the evening was the 31-0 advantage BYU held in fast-break points. For a team that felt sluggish in their previous outing against Ohio State, this performance served as a direct response to coaching demands for higher intensity.

Ohio state university scratched red

“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a stat in a game where its 31-0 on fast break points,” Young observed. “That’s pretty remarkable. We talked a ton coming into this game about how I actually felt like we played too slow in the Ohio State game and I wasn’t happy with that.”

The strategy was evident early. BYU opened with a 16-4 run in the first five minutes, fueled by four of their first six field goals coming from beyond the arc. By halftime, the Cougars held a 56-30 lead, shooting 53% from 3-point range. The momentum carried into the second half, where the lead swelled to as many as 44 points following a Chandler triple with 4:51 remaining.

Looking Toward the Next Challenge

While the result was a definitive statement, the coaching staff remains focused on the practical application of these rotations. Branch, reflecting on the team’s faster pace, noted that the focus on transition defense and “paint-to-great threes” was a deliberate adjustment from their previous game.

The question remains how these rotations will hold up against stiffer competition as the non-conference schedule progresses. With the team now acclimated to the Marriott Center environment and deep into their bench, BYU looks to carry this momentum into their upcoming matchup against Queens University this Tuesday.
