California Men Arrested in Phoenix After Cross-Border Hostage Plot
A pair of individuals from California are presently detained in Maricopa County on $500,000 bonds following accusations that they drove to Arizona, kidnapped an individual close to the southern border, and kept him hostage in Phoenix while demanding money from his relatives.
The situation came to light when legal authorities stated that Anthony Chavez and Akhilleus Eaton, both 21 years old, seized the captive from an isolated countryside sector beside the Arizona-Mexico border. The suspects then drove him north into the Valley against his will, confining him to a room while making extortion demands to his relatives in Mexico. Phoenix police arrested the two suspects on Tuesday evening. When officers searched the vehicle driven by Chavez, they discovered a firearm and ammunition hidden inside the engine compartment.
Court Details and Gang Connections
During an initial court appearance in Phoenix, the state outlined the harrowing ordeal, describing Eaton as the alleged ringleader of the operation. Police reported that Eaton wielded a knife while taking the captive’s mobile device to place the extortion calls.
Meanwhile, Chavez allegedly carried a pistol, pulling back the slide and placing the firearm on his lap to frighten the prisoner and ensure his obedience throughout the detention.
Lawyers for the prosecution contended that both suspects pose extreme dangers to community safety and significant flight risks, pointing out that they live in California and possess no clear connections to Arizona. In fact, law enforcement believes that Mr. Eaton and the three accomplices specifically traveled here to Arizona to specifically engage in this type of crime,
the state’s attorney said in court on Wednesday.
Court records show extensive criminal histories for both suspects in California. Chavez is currently serving a probation term for a past felony conviction involving an assault with a deadly weapon, in addition to an extensive juvenile record. Eaton, acknowledged as an associate of the Oak Park Bloods gang, also features a substantial juvenile background along with prior arrests related to firearms. Sacramento gang detectives previously uncovered an AR pistol and an illegal handgun at his home during a November 2024 raid.
A judge ordered the release of two additional men taken into custody alongside Eaton and Chavez without filing charges, determining that the prosecution failed to establish probable cause and emphasizing that under Arizona law, simply being present at the location of an offense is not enough to justify criminal charges.
