Across the NFL, the yellow flag has been a frequent sight to open the 2026 season, a product of the league’s renewed emphasis on certain rules that weren’t as strictly enforced a year ago. For the Kansas City Chiefs, these infractions have become a persistent internal hurdle, with statistics showing a consistent struggle despite some surprising rankings.
The Chiefs rank 12th in the NFL in penalties accepted against them with 52. However, this ranking masks a troubling trend: Kansas City has only one game this season with fewer than seven penalties. That low-total game, ironically, was the Chiefs’ worst showing of the season in Seattle, where they finished with just two infractions. Their penalty count for the season includes seven in Week 1 against the Broncos, exactly eight in each of the next four games, and a season-high 11 in their most recent matchup against Denver.
Chiefs Commit Most Penalties During or After Plays
A large percentage of Kansas City’s fouls are occurring during or after the play. Of their 52 penalties, 38 fall into that category. The team also has 10 additional penalties that were not accepted against them, with six being declined and four occurring in situations with offsetting fouls. Despite these issues, the Chiefs are tied with the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons for the fewest pre-snap penalties in the league with 14.
Chiefs Concede More Penalty Yards than Opponents
Penalty yardage reveals another area of concern for Kansas City. The team ranks 18th in the NFL in penalty yards (464) on fouls accepted against them. Through seven games, the Chiefs are averaging 66.29 penalty yards per game, and they are averaging 23.43 more penalty yards per game than their opposition. This yardage disparity comes with a penalty rate that is 1.29 fouls per game higher than their average opponent.
