Ciara Mageean and Thomas Moran: A Timeline of Their Relationship and Wedding Celebrations

Ciara Mageean and Thomas Moran Celebrate Second Wedding at Darver Castle After Belfast Ceremony

Irish middle-distance runner and European champion Ciara Mageean has married her longtime partner and former training partner, Thomas Moran, in a pair of wedding celebrations following her stage four bowel cancer diagnosis. EVOKE reported that the athlete and her husband hosted their second wedding at Darver Castle in County Louth, following an initial civil ceremony at Belfast City Hall.

The couple, who have been together for more than a decade after first meeting while studying at University College Dublin (UCD), marked their second celebration surrounded by family and friends. Mageean shared moments from the weekend on social media, writing: “I hope you didn’t think we were skipping the party. For the Louth celebration, Mageean wore a long, flowing dress with spaghetti straps and a cowl neckline, a departure from the short wrap-style dress and leather jacket she wore for their initial Belfast registry office appearance outside Titanic Belfast.”

A Decade on the Track and a Life Together

Thomas Moran shares a deep connection to athletics alongside Mageean. Over the years, Moran relocated to Manchester to support Mageean’s elite athletic career.

Moran proposed over Christmas in 2024, and Mageean publicly announced their engagement in January 2025, calling him her “biggest prize yet” and “my training partner for life,” while plans for a wedding took on urgency after Mageean received a cancer diagnosis. Speaking on the BBC’s GAA Social podcast in July, Mageean addressed her determination to move forward with the ceremony despite ongoing medical treatments, noting that she coordinated with her medical team to pause portions of her chemotherapy schedule so her immunity would support a celebration. She recalled people asking if they meant 2027 when told the wedding was planned for September or October, replying: No, no, no, this year! and adding: I’m not going to let this cancer get in the way of that. She also described sitting by the river with Thomas, telling Patrick Kielty on the Late Last Show: Sitting there beside the river with Thomas and deciding that I’m going to have to actually make a call on this and yeah I sat there with him, I had a cry.

Accelerated Plans and Coping with a Terminal Diagnosis

In an interview with The Irish Times, Mageean explained her decision to expedite the wedding timeline, stating that she wanted a normal celebration rather than marrying from a hospital bed. Reflecting on the prognosis and her relationship with Moran, she shared open concerns about the future, telling the publication that she worries about leaving him on his own.

The wedding events brought together numerous figures from the Irish sporting community. Teammates and fellow athletes including Sophie Becker, Sarah Healy, and Team GB’s Phily Bowden shared public congratulations as images from the Belfast registry office and the Darver Castle reception circulated online, captured by photographers including John Gillooley and Andrew McKenna.

Reflecting on her ongoing health journey, she emphasized: Right now, my focus is on healing and taking things one day at a time, adding that she was sustained by the love and support of my family and close friends.
