Southern Connecticut Field Hockey Drops Narrow 1-0 Decision to SNHU at Jess Dow Field
Southern Connecticut State held Southern New Hampshire to a single goal for 40 minutes on Sunday afternoon, but the Owls ultimately dropped a 1-0 Northeast-10 Conference decision at Jess Dow Field. scsuowls.com reported that sophomore Sophie Bilodeau broke a scoreless tie in the second quarter to lift the Penmen.
The loss moves Southern Connecticut to 7-10 overall and 3-5 in conference play. SNHU improved to 8-8 on the season and 3-5 in the NE10, securing its second consecutive shutout.
Defensive Resistance and First-Half Pressure
The visiting Penmen controlled the tempo early, generating 10 shots in the first 30 minutes. SNHU held a 14-3 advantage in total shots and a 10-3 edge in shots on goal for the afternoon. Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Lyndsay Troisi anchored the defense with eight saves, while defender Sofia Frassinelli provided a crucial defensive stop at the 6:42 mark of the first quarter by clearing a Bilodeau attempt off the line after it slipped past Troisi.
SNHU broke through at 20:15 of the second quarter. Senior Zoe Demers set up Bilodeau for her third goal of the season, which also marked her second game-winner of the year. Demers finished the day with four shots on target and recorded her first assist of the season, extending her team lead to seven goals and 15 points.
Despite the heavy defensive workload, the Owls tightened up after halftime. SCSU allowed just four shots over the final two quarters, with Troisi turning away attempts in the 32nd and 46th minutes to keep the deficit at one.
Offensive Opportunities Fall Short
Southern Connecticut generated three shots on goal, all stopped by SNHU goalkeeper Agustina Miranda Waigand. Waigand earned her sixth shutout of the season and the 11th of her career across 60 minutes of work.
The Owls’ best scoring chances came off penalty corners, where they held a 4-3 advantage. Lindsey Onofrio tested Waigand at 8:31 following a corner from Ruby Webb, and Isabella Sharp-Senior forced another save at 37:01. Kaiya Mercier also fired a shot with 8:19 remaining in regulation—moments after SNHU’s Olivia Andersen received a green card—but Waigand turned it away.
Regular-Season Finale Ahead
The result marks the 12th consecutive victory for SNHU in the all-time series against Southern Connecticut, giving the Penmen a 12-2 advantage overall. SNHU continues its push toward a top-seven finish in the Northeast-10 standings to secure a spot in the conference tournament.

Southern Connecticut will look to bounce back in its regular-season finale when it travels to Worcester, Massachusetts, to face Assumption on Saturday, Nov. 7.
