Colorado Football Falls to 3-6 After Loss at Arizona State
Colorado’s bowl game hopes faded Saturday night after a 20-10 loss to Arizona State.
The defeat leaves the Buffaloes with a 3-6 overall record and tied for last place in the Big 12 with a 1-5 conference mark.
To reach bowl eligibility, Colorado must win its final three games of the season. Failure to do so would result in the team finishing below .500 for the third time in Deion Sanders’ four seasons as head coach.
This would also mark the first time the program has ended a season with a losing record during the tenure of athletic director Fernando Lovo, who succeeded Rick George at the end of 2025.
When asked at his postgame news conference if he felt his job was in jeopardy, Sanders deflected the focus away from his own status.
Man, I don’t think about that, man. I’m not here for my job, I’m here for these young men. I’m not built like that. I’m really not. I’m really, really not. Like, I want these kids to graduate, to provoke change in their communities and their lives and their families. I ain’t worried about me. I’m good, my brother. I’m not worried about me. I’m worried about others. That’s who I’m called to be.
The game against Arizona State mirrored several recurring struggles for Colorado this season. The Buffaloes failed to establish an effective running game, allowed quarterback Isaac Wilson to be sacked four times, and fell into a 17-0 deficit by halftime.
Statistical trends highlight the challenges the team has faced throughout the year. Colorado currently ranks 116th out of 138 teams in college football, averaging only 21 points per game.
The defense has struggled as well, allowing an average of 32 points per contest, which ranks 118th nationally.
Saturday’s loss also extended a difficult streak for the program. The Buffaloes have now lost nine consecutive Big 12 road games, meaning the team has not secured a conference victory away from home in two years.
Sanders acknowledged the lack of continuity as a primary factor in the team’s performance.
Consistency, consistency, just consistency. We’re just not consistent whatsoever in many phases of the game that it takes to win football games. We’re just not consistent. Not by any means.
The path forward requires a stark turnaround for a program that has struggled to find its footing on the road and in conference play. With three games remaining, the focus remains on whether the team can find the necessary consistency to salvage the final stretch of the season.
