DeForest Buckner Returns to San Francisco as Colts Fire Sale Continues
The Indianapolis Colts shipped three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, marking the second major trade of the franchise’s ongoing roster teardown. The deal brings Buckner back to the organization that drafted him seventh overall in 2016, with Indianapolis receiving a 2027 fourth-round draft pick in return for the lineman, who is playing in the final year of his contract.

The move follows an earlier Tuesday transaction that sent All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks. Both trades signal a reset by the Colts in the wake of long-time general manager Chris Ballard’s firing a week prior. Interim general manager Ed Dodds is executing the front office’s new direction under the oversight of co-owner and CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon.
Draft Capital Accumulation and Roster State
Trading Buckner and Nelson gives the Colts additional draft ammunition as they reshape their roster. The franchise surrendered its first-round selection for the upcoming draft to the New York Jets last November to acquire Pro Bowl corner Sauce Gardner. Tuesday’s deals injected a third-round pick and a fourth-round pick for next year, alongside a fifth-rounder in 2028.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted the transactional mechanics behind the timing. If Buckner had simply played out his contract and signed elsewhere in the offseason, the highest compensatory draft pick the Colts could have secured was a fifth-rounder due to his status as an 11-year NFL veteran. Instead, the front office converted that potential late-round return into an earlier 2027 fourth-round selection.
The fire sale may not be finished in Indianapolis. Running back Jonathan Taylor stands as a prime trade candidate ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
How the Deal Shapes the 49ers Defense
For San Francisco, acquiring Buckner addresses the defensive line. Mykel Williams, the team’s first-round pick in 2025, only recently returned to the lineup after a torn ACL prematurely ended his rookie season.
Buckner brings a familiar presence to the locker room. He spent his first four NFL seasons in San Francisco, helping anchor a defense that reached Super Bowl 54. Tight end George Kittle, who played alongside Buckner during that run, celebrated the homecoming on X. Buckner has appeared in seven games in 2026, recording four sacks, 31 tackles, and eight quarterback hits across 353 defensive snaps.
Following a loss to Atlanta and heading into a Week 8 bye, the team has extra time to integrate Buckner back into their defensive scheme ahead of the second half of the season.
