Darrin Camilleri Elected Michigan Senate Majority Leader After Democratic Midterm Sweep
Voters sent a clear message on Tuesday. They are fed up with the kind of politics that has repeatedly ignored the needs of working-class families. They want leaders who are ready to take the gloves off and actually fight to lower costs and deliver on their promises,
Darrin Camilleri said on Wednesday following his selection as the new leader of the Michigan Senate.
Trenton Democrat Darrin Camilleri will serve as the next state Senate majority leader, party officials announced following votes held among state senators, FOX 2 Detroit reported. Camilleri steps into the role succeeding Winnie Brinks, who transitions to her new position as lieutenant governor on January 1. AOL reported the leadership update following the 2026 midterm elections, which resulted in Michigan Democrats securing majorities in both chambers of the state legislature.
Congrats to Senator Hauck! He will be a great minority leader. https://t.co/eHpAD35XSY
The shift in legislative control gives the party a governing trifecta heading into the upcoming session. Camilleri pointed directly to that dynamic while outlining his caucus’s legislative priorities for the months ahead.
Legislative Counterparts and Minority Leadership
Across the aisle, Republican senators met to organize their own caucus for the upcoming term. Lawmakers selected state Sen. Roger Hauck of Mount Pleasant to serve as the Senate minority leader.

I’m honored to have the support of my colleagues and the opportunity to lead our caucus. We have a strong team ready to tackle the challenges facing Michigan families,
Hauck stated after the vote. He added that our state has fallen behind in jobs, education and too many other areas,
emphasizing that Republican lawmakers remain committed to offering an alternative path forward.
With both caucuses now organized under new leadership, the stage is set for a closely watched legislative session in Lansing as lawmakers prepare to take office at the start of the year.
