DeChambeau Leads Charge in Round 1 of The Open Championship

DeChambeau Cards 3-Under 67 at The Open

Bryson DeChambeau surged into contention at the 154th Open Championship on Thursday, carding a 3-under 67 in the opening round at Royal Birkdale. The performance marks a significant turnaround for the Crushers GC captain, who entered the tournament following three consecutive missed cuts in this year’s major championships.

DeChambeau’s round, which included five birdies, places him two shots behind early leader Jackson Suber, who finished at 5-under. Despite a bogey on the 18th hole that left him with a “sour taste,” DeChambeau emphasized a measured, strategic approach to the challenging links course.

“I feel like I did a really good job today of being incredibly strategic and focused super hard on placing it in the right places,” DeChambeau said.

The round was notably played alongside world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Legion XIII’s Tyrrell Hatton. DeChambeau expressed admiration for Scheffler’s performance, describing his ball-striking as “beautiful” and noting that playing alongside the world number one provided a useful gauge for his own game.

Strategic Response to Criticism

DeChambeau’s focus on strategy followed public criticism from Sir Nick Faldo, who recently questioned the golfer’s understanding of links tactics on a Sky Sports Golf podcast. Faldo had previously remarked that DeChambeau had “zero clue of strategy” regarding how to navigate a links course.

Following the opening round, Faldo suggested on-air that his comments may have “rattled” the player, noting, “He’s basically stuck you know what up and said: ‘Faldo, I do have strategy.’”

DeChambeau, who declined traditional media interviews in favor of answering pre-submitted questions, defended his approach. “I feel like I did a really good job today of being incredibly strategic,” he stated, adding that he intends to continue refining his driving and 3-wood play as the tournament progresses.

LIV Golf Contingent Performance

DeChambeau was not the only LIV Golf representative to find success in the opening round. Thomas Detry matched his 3-under 67 to sit in a tie for fourth place. Detry, who played a bogey-free round after the sixth hole, noted that the firm, fast conditions at Birkdale rewarded players who could find the right spots off the tee.

Looking Toward the Weekend

While DeChambeau’s opening score provides a strong foundation, he remains cautious about the remainder of the tournament. “Any time you get off to a great start, it’s awesome, but there’s three more days, dude,” he said. “There’s still a lot of golf to be played.”

DeChambeau’s history at The Open has been mixed, with three missed cuts in eight appearances and a best finish of tied eighth in 2022. As he looks toward the second round, his primary goal remains consistency. He spent time on the driving range following his round to work on his driving, acknowledging that while he hits the ball further than many of his peers, he needs to ensure his accuracy on the course.

As the field prepares for Friday, DeChambeau’s performance has successfully placed him squarely in the mix, offering a stark contrast to his recent struggles in the major circuit this season.
