New Mexico Congressional Races Confirm Status Quo as Democrats Retain Control
Following the intense electoral cycle of 2026, the political map in New Mexico has remained firmly in the hands of the Democratic Party. Voters across the state weighed in on all three U.S. House seats and the Senate seat currently held by Ben Ray Luján, ultimately deciding to keep the incumbent delegation in Washington. This consistency at the ballot box arrives at a time when national control of the U.S. House and Senate has officially shifted to Democratic hands, marking a significant consolidation of power for the party.
The results from across the state reflect a clear pattern of voter preference that held steady even as challengers mounted significant campaigns in each district. With 98% of precincts reporting as of Tuesday morning, the margins indicate that the Democratic incumbents—Melanie Stansbury, Gabriel Vasquez, and Teresa Leger Fernandez—each maintained comfortable leads over their Republican counterparts.
District-by-District Breakdown of the 2026 Results
In the 1st Congressional District, incumbent Representative Melanie Stansbury secured a decisive victory, capturing 64% of the vote against Republican challenger Ndidiamaka Okpareke, who finished with 36%. The tally currently stands at 178,261 votes for Stansbury compared to 102,301 for Okpareke.
The 2nd Congressional District saw a tighter but still substantial margin. Representative Gabriel Vasquez held off Republican challenger Gregory Cunningham, securing 59% of the vote with 123,113 ballots cast in his favor, while Cunningham trailed with 41% and 86,650 votes. Meanwhile, in the 3rd Congressional District, Representative Teresa Leger Fernandez successfully defended her seat against Martin Zamora, finishing with 61% of the vote to Zamora’s 39%.
The statewide Senate race followed this trend. Senator Ben Ray Luján is projected to win reelection, having garnered 455,165 votes, or 63% of the total, compared to 265,557 votes for Republican challenger Larry Marker. With 2,159 out of 2,204 precincts reporting, the outcome for the Senate seat appears effectively settled.
