Democrats Win Two Seats in Montgomery County School Board Election

Democrat Dwayne Farrior secured 65% of the vote in District 1 on Tuesday, unseating Republican incumbent Lesa Keith and ending her tenure of more than 10 years on the Montgomery County Board of Education, WSFA reported.

The lopsided margin headlined an election in which Montgomery residents voted three new members onto the school board. The results grant Democrats two of the three contested seats, while the third goes to an unopposed candidate.

A decisive shift in District 1

In District 1, Farrior defeated Keith 65% to 35%. It is a decisive shift for a district where the incumbent had served for over a decade. Keith’s departure closes a chapter on the board that spanned more than 10 years.

New faces in District 5 and District 6

District 5 also changed hands. Democrat Alvin Tucker won the seat with 55% of the vote, defeating Republican Melissa Snowden. Snowden, who had previously served on the board, garnered 45% in her bid to return to the panel.

In District 6, Jerome Jones Jr. secured a seat without opposition. Jones is a former Montgomery TV news reporter.

The weight of the board’s mandate

The three new members will join the Montgomery County Board of Education, the governing body responsible for overseeing the county’s public school system. Board members set policy, approve budgets, and hire the superintendent—decisions that directly affect teachers, parents, and students across the district.

Tuesday’s results leave the board with a new configuration in three districts, replacing two incumbents and adding one new member who faced no challenger. With Farrior, Tucker, and Jones taking their seats, the panel begins its next term with fresh representation from across Montgomery County.
