Denzel Bentley’s journey to becoming a world champion was far from conventional, according to Boxingscene. The 31-year-old Londoner first entered the boxing world through a fight club run by his brother on his local estate, using only a headguard, gloves, and a friend for his first taste of the sport. Bentley, who now boasts a professional record of 22 wins, three losses, and one draw, quickly realized that street boxing was vastly different from the real thing.
From Street Fighter to World Champion
Facing challenges in both technique and finance, Bentley found creative ways to pursue his dream. He recalled a period when his bank account was dwindling, forcing him to consider alternative work, even coming close to becoming a delivery driver. To get to the gym, he devised a system using Santander bikes.
Bentley’s persistence paid off. He ended 2024 on a high note, winning the British middleweight title for a third time and adding the European crown. After a 16-month absence from the ring, he captured the WBO interim middleweight title by overcoming Endry Saavedra in April 2026. Three months later, he was elevated to full world champion status following Janibek Alimkhanuly’s decision to move up to super-middleweight, finally achieving his lifelong goal.
His reign was short-lived, lasting just 102 days. Bentley was stripped of his title after he agreed to face Shane Mosely Jr. instead of his mandatory challenger, Cuba’s Yoenli Hernandez. The WBO had mandated the defense on September 5, giving both sides 20 days to reach an agreement.
Bentley, who fights Mosely Jr. at London’s Copper Box Arena, expressed frustration over the decision but remains focused on his future with new promoter Zuffa Boxing.
