Former Jackson Mayor Derek Dobies will return to City Hall after beating John Wilson in Tuesday’s election with roughly 59% of the vote to Wilson’s 41%, per unofficial Jackson County results with all 56 precincts counted, WKAR reported.
This win puts Dobies back in office; he previously held the mayor’s seat from 2017 to 2021, then stepped down and backed sitting Mayor Daniel Mahoney, who chose not to run for another term.
What are the biggest challenges facing Jackson? In my recent interview with JTV, we talked about the issues I hear about every day from residents: fixing our roads, making our neighborhoods safer, and lowering the cost of living for working families. https://t.co/1FBNsFDJQF
A Familiar Face Returns to Jackson City Hall
Prior to his mayoral tenure, Dobies spent six years on the Jackson City Council representing Ward 6 and four years as vice mayor. He now sits on the Jackson Public Schools Board of Education and is chief of staff at the Michigan AFL-CIO. During his previous tenure, he focused on downtown redevelopment, infrastructure improvements and neighborhood investment. His campaign for another term emphasized economic development, affordable housing, public safety and improvements to city streets.
Wilson, a longtime local resident with multiple prior mayoral campaigns, ran for the city’s highest elected office in the nonpartisan contest.
Treasurer Race Settled, Charter Change Rejected
In a separate city race, Nanette Muntin beat David Hammontree for a partial term as Jackson treasurer, taking roughly 55% of the vote. Voters also rejected a proposed amendment to the city charter related to the treasurer’s office, with about 69% voting against the measure.
Countywide 911 Surcharge Passes, Township Millages Split
Across Jackson County, voters approved a surcharge to support the county’s 911 emergency communications system, with about 58% voting in favor and 42% opposed.
Several township proposals also received voter approval. In Blackman Charter Township, voters approved a parks and recreation millage with about 61% support. Voters in Liberty Township passed a new millage for the fire department, and those in Concord Township renewed a road millage. In Norvell Township, however, voters rejected a public safety millage, with about 57% opposed.
School Millage Passes by a Narrow Margin
Voters in Concord Community Schools narrowly approved an operating millage renewal, with about 51% voting in favor.

Republican Gains Shift County Election Outcomes
County turnout topped 53%, with more than 68,000 Jackson County residents voting in Tuesday’s election, representing about 53% of registered voters. Republicans also carried Jackson County in several major statewide races, including governor and U.S. Senate, meaning the local Democratic-leaning city results sit inside a county that moved the other way at the top of the ticket.
What happens next is already on the calendar: Dobies is heading back to City Hall, and voters approved a 911 surcharge along with several township millages. For Jackson residents, the practical stakes are concrete — who runs City Hall, how 911 calls get answered, and local funding for roads, fire protection and schools.
