More than 200 vendors gather at the EMC Expo Center for the Des Moines Holiday Boutique
Dozens of people stood in line for pickles and sausage on Saturday as the Des Moines Holiday Boutique opened its doors at the EMC Expo Center. The event, which saw shoppers navigating a massive floor plan of local commerce, featured more than 200 vendors offering everything from handmade Christmas countdown books to specialty food items, according to a report from the Des Moines Register.
The boutique serves as a significant seasonal hub for local makers and small businesses. Among the participants was the Simply Stella Rose boutique, which joined a wide array of other vendors providing goods for the holiday season. While many attendees focused on unique gifts—such as a Christmas countdown book created by Janice Lynn of Ankeny—the event also integrated community-focused activities, including a station where shoppers could color a banner featuring the Des Moines skyline and the phrase “Tis The Season.”
Beyond the retail aspect, the boutique functions as a platform for local philanthropy. The event organizers have partnered with the DMARC Food Pantry Network to support the “Fill a Cupboard for the Holidays” initiative. DMARC operates as the largest health-based food pantry network in Iowa, focusing on meeting basic human needs within the greater Des Moines community by providing healthy and culturally appropriate food to those in need.
Charitable partnerships support DMARC food pantry efforts
The connection between local shopping and community assistance is built into the event’s ticketing and programming. According to information provided by the Des Moines Holiday Boutique, attendees have the option to donate $30 to fill a cupboard for those in need when purchasing tickets online. This direct contribution model aims to provide immediate relief to families facing food insecurity during the holiday season.
In addition to direct donations, the boutique has collaborated with WOI to feature hand-drawn holiday cards created by children from the Des Moines area. Five of these specific cards are available for purchase at the event, with all proceeds directed toward supporting DMARC’s network of food pantries. This multi-layered approach allows the event to serve both the economic interests of local vendors and the social needs of the regional population.
The scale of the event reflects a broader trend in regional seasonal markets, where the intersection of small-scale entrepreneurship and organized charity creates a localized economic ecosystem. For the vendors, the boutique provides a concentrated audience of holiday shoppers; for the community, it offers a structured way to address food scarcity through consumer participation.
Santa Claus also made an appearance at the EMC Expo Center on Saturday, providing a traditional holiday experience for families visiting the vendors and food stalls.
