Horror Movie Night Strikes the Ballroom With a Double Elimination
Dancing with the Stars embraced the macabre on October 27, delivering a high-stakes Horror Movie Night for season 35 that ended with the departures of Jackson Olson and Emma Slater alongside Tyler Cameron and Sharna Burgess, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Because no couples were eliminated during Dedication Night on October 21, producers instituted a double elimination for the Halloween-themed episode. The two outgoing pairs were determined by combining the judges’ scores and viewer votes from both weeks of competition.
The Leaderboard and Shirley Ballas’s Strict Scoring
Guest judge Shirley Ballas arrived with a reputation for uncompromising standards, warned days earlier on Instagram by former pro Louis Van Amstel, who noted she is a “danger’s nightmare” and a stickler for technical rules. Ballas wasted no time setting a rigorous tone, awarding a four to Julia Stiles and Ezra Sosa, as well as to Tatyana Ali and Jan Ravnik, even as her fellow judges handed out higher marks.
Despite the tough judging panel, Harry Shum Jr. and Jenna Johnson made history during the episode. The Grey’s Anatomy actor and his partner became the first couple of season 35 to earn a perfect score, securing a 40/40 for their contemporary routine to “Toxic” by 2WEI, inspired by the 2004 horror film Saw. Carrie Ann Inaba offered a standing ovation, praising it as the contemporary routine the ballroom had been waiting for.
Following the top-scoring pair, Jenna Dewan and Val Chmerkovskiy earned a 37/40 for an Argentine tango inspired by zombie films, while Connor Wood and Rylee Arnold matched that 37/40 total. Val Chmerkovskiy’s return to the ballroom followed a one-week suspension tied to comments made during a previous broadcast regarding Carrie Ann Inaba’s judging.
Combined Standings After Two Weeks
When the judges’ scores and viewer votes from Dedication Night and Horror Movie Night were tallied together, the leaderboard shaped up with distinct frontrunners and vulnerable pairs at the bottom.

| Rank | Couple | Combined Score |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Harry Shum Jr. and Jenna Johnson | 76/80 |
| 2 | Amber Glenn and Pasha Pashkov | 74/80 |
| 2 | Jenna Dewan and Val Chmerkovskiy | 74/80 |
| 4 | Ezra Frech and Daniella Karagach | 72/80 |
| 5 | Connor Wood and Rylee Arnold | 69/80 |
| 6 | Jackson Olson and Emma Slater | 67/80 (ELIMINATED) |
| 6 | Maura Higgins and Mark Ballas | 67/80 |
| 8 | Julia Stiles and Ezra Sosa | 62/80 |
| 9 | Tatyana Ali and Jan Ravnik | 60/80 |
| 10 | Tyler Cameron and Sharna Burgess | 58/80 (ELIMINATED) |
The bottom three couples standing at the end of the elimination were Jackson Olson and Emma Slater, Tyler Cameron and Sharna Burgess, and Tatyana Ali and Jan Ravnik. Ultimately, Olson and Slater alongside Cameron and Burgess fell below the safety threshold.
Looking Ahead to Disney Night
With the field narrowed down to the remaining competitors—including Tatyana Ali, Jenna Dewan, Ezra Frech, Amber Glenn, Maura Higgins, Harry Shum Jr., Julia Stiles, and Connor Wood—the competition shifts tone next week. Alfonso Ribeiro announced during the broadcast that Cynthia Erivo will join the judging panel as a guest judge for the upcoming Disney-themed episode.
Season 35 of Dancing With the Stars continues its run, simulcasting Tuesdays at 8 p.m. across ABC and Disney+ while streaming the following day on Hulu.
