Freshmen Lift Tennessee Soccer Past Oklahoma in Season Finale
Tennessee soccer closed out its season on a high note Sunday afternoon at Regal Soccer Stadium, leaning on its youngest roster talent to defeat Oklahoma 3-1. Freshmen Emerson Moore and Cora Fry provided all the offense for the Lady Vols, snapping a winless streak to end the year and keeping their slim NCAA Tournament chances alive.
The victory brought Tennessee’s final record to 7-5-4 overall and 2-5-3 in Southeastern Conference play. While the Lady Vols finished with nine conference points—the fourth-lowest in the SEC—their resume still features a vital win against a top-50 opponent in the Sooners.
Moore Strikes Early and Often
Emerson Moore set the tone early for the home side. Just six minutes into the match, the freshman dribbled into the box and ripped a shot to the far post that rolled untouched into the back of the net. The score marked her first career goal and gave Tennessee its fourth lead of conference play.

She struck again 36 minutes later, handling a pass in the center of the box and firing past the Oklahoma goalkeeper to secure a 2-0 halftime advantage. It was the Lady Vols’ third brace of the season, but their first since the season-opener against Rutgers.
“I thought she was gritty and tough,” head coach Joe Kirt said. “It was about getting on first and second balls. I think all the midfielders — her, Ines and Dak did a really good job of finding space, especially in the first half to get on the ball. It really allowed us to keep the ball on their end for long stretches.”
Forward Sophia Prime anchored the attack alongside the midfield, using her ability to hold the ball up to let the Lady Vols establish possession higher up the field. That early control helped Tennessee outshoot Oklahoma 12-11, putting five shots on target and converting three.
Closing Out a Grueling Campaign
Oklahoma fought back in the second half when a 57th-minute header cut the deficit to one. But Cora Fry answered for Tennessee shortly after, taking a feed from Ines Derrien and chipping it past the keeper for her own first career goal to extend the lead to 3-1. Fry logged 77 minutes of work on the afternoon.
“As a freshman, the most challenging part is staying through and playing into November,” Kirt said. “It’s the most grueling kind of thing they’ve ever done, and for them to step up at the end of the season right now is a credit to Sam Black, our performance coach, but also to them mentally and physically.”
Goalkeeper Cayden Norris anchored the defense with four saves, limiting the Sooners to a single goal.
The Postseason Bubble Beckons
Though the season is likely over, Tennessee’s NCAA Tournament chances are still alive. The program now awaits the selection show to see if its RPI and top-50 victory over Oklahoma are enough to crack the NCAA Tournament field.

“It’ll help us. How much? We’ll see at the end of the next week,” Kirt said regarding the team’s tournament résumé. “We’ll give ourselves an opportunity with where we are. I don’t know where our RPI is at the moment, but I believe we’re in that bubble.”
The Lady Vols will learn their ultimate fate on November 16 during the selection show.
