Fayetteville State Claims No. 1 Seed in 2026 CIAA Volleyball Championship After Tiebreaker Review

A three-way scramble at the top of the conference standings has finally been untangled. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced the official seeding and quarterfinal matchups for the 47th CIAA Volleyball Championship, setting the stage for an eight-team postseason bracket at the Rocky Mount Event Center in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

The tournament field takes shape following a regular-season finish that saw Fayetteville State University, Virginia State University, and Livingstone College lock into an identical three-way tie at the summit of the conference. According to official championship documents released by the conference, administrators applied the established tiebreaker procedures outlined in the CIAA Volleyball Sporting Code to separate the top contenders.

Crunching head-to-head match results, sets lost, and total points scored across the regular-season meetings ultimately handed Fayetteville State the No. 1 seed and the title of CIAA Regular Season Champion. Virginia State secured the No. 2 seed, while Livingstone claimed the No. 3 spot in the bracket.

Fayetteville State Clinches Tiebreaker Advantage Using Sets Lost

Resolving the tie required a deep dive into the complex tiebreaker criteria mandated by the conference. When Fayetteville State and Virginia State split their two regular-season meetings—with Fayetteville State winning 3–0 and Virginia State returning the favor with a 3–2 victory—administrators turned to sets lost. Fayetteville State had dropped only three sets across those two matches compared to five for Virginia State, giving the former the head-to-head advantage.

Fayetteville State and Livingstone also split their regular-season series, with each program earning a 3–0 sweep against the other. With sets won and lost deadlocked at three apiece, the conference advanced to the second tier of the Sporting Code: total points scored in head-to-head competition. Fayetteville State outscored Livingstone 135 to 125 across the two matches, securing the top seed through a 10-point scoring margin.

Meanwhile, the battle for the remaining top seeds settled through a direct comparison between Virginia State and Livingstone. Having also split their regular-season matchups—Virginia State winning 3–1 and Livingstone taking a 3–2 thriller—the tie broke on sets lost. Virginia State finished with four sets lost against Livingstone’s five, locking down the No. 2 seed and leaving Livingstone with No. 3.

The meticulous application of head-to-head metrics successfully cleared the logjam without forcing a coin toss.
