The US Federal Reserve held interest rates steady on Oct 28, maintaining the benchmark range at 3.75% to 4%.
A hold isn’t relief,
said Kelly Brown, CEO of Ampersand.
The Federal Reserve paused borrowing costs to signal the market to wait. The central bank acknowledged that inflation remains elevated. This move was widely expected.
Current inflation levels sit around a percentage point above the Fed’s 2 percent target.
Two Officials Dissent over Interest Rate Increase
Two officials pushed for a quarter-percentage-point increase in a 10-2 vote. This revealed a rift within the Federal Open Market Committee. It contrasts with the unanimous decision to raise rates in September.
- Lisa Cook: The Fed governor cast her first dissent. President Donald Trump currently targets her for removal.
- Beth Hammack: The Cleveland Fed president also voted for the hike. She is known for her hawkish stance.
Fed Upgrades Economic Assessment
The Fed upgraded its assessment of the economy from “solid” to “strong.” Domestic spending has remained resilient despite geopolitical uncertainty.
“Productivity growth is strong, and capital investment is robust,” the Fed said, repeating comments from last month’s statement. “Job gains have kept pace with the workforce, and the unemployment rate has changed little.”
Federal Reserve
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh assumed leadership in May. He remained vague about the future of monetary policy during his press conference.
Warsh was asked about price stability. He simply stated, We’re working on it.
He refused to share his musings
regarding the next meeting in six weeks. He did this to avoid prejudging meetings.

Energy Costs Pressure Businesses
Oil is trading above US$100 a barrel. Inflation sits at 3.7%. Because of these figures, Kelly Brown noted borrowing costs are unlikely to drop soon.
High energy costs for diesel fuel continue to pressure agriculture and shipping.
Inflation and the cost of living are central issues for the Nov 3 midterm elections. The outcome will determine if Republicans maintain control of Congress. Otherwise, Democrats may gain oversight powers over the Fed.
Markets Expect December Hikes
Investors expect rate hikes to resume in December. These could potentially continue into 2027. The Fed has missed its inflation target for five and a half years.

The central bank now awaits a Commerce Department report scheduled for Thursday. This report contains consumer price inflation readings that the Fed prefers.
The official mandate remains firm: The Committee will deliver price stability.
