Red Wings Suspend Dylan Larkin as Trade Talks Intensify

Detroit Red Wings Suspend Dylan Larkin Without Pay After Forward Demands Immediate Trade

The Detroit Red Wings officially suspended star forward Dylan Larkin without pay on Thursday, escalating a bitter stalemate that has hung over the franchise since the summer. The team announced the suspension hours after the 30-year-old center missed morning skate and was held out of the lineup for trade-related reasons, as reported by ESPN. Larkin will forfeit $41,000 per day during the suspension.

The drastic step arrives following a call from Larkin’s agent, Pat Brisson, informing interim general manager Shawn Horcoff that Larkin refused to report to the rink and no longer wanted to play for the organization. Horcoff addressed reporters on Thursday night, confirming that the relationship had reached a breaking point. “Dylan no longer wants to be a Red Wing, and he’s not with us,” Horcoff said. “That pretty much is a strong statement.”

The Anatomy of a Fractured Relationship

Larkin’s decision to walk away stems from mounting frustration over the franchise’s direction. Drafted in the first round in 2014, the Michigan native has experienced just one five-game playoff stint back in his 2015-16 rookie season. The Red Wings have missed the playoffs the past 10 seasons, the longest drought in their history and the longest active drought in the NHL.

Friction behind the scenes reached a head when Larkin requested a trade in June following clashes with former general manager Steve Yzerman, who was subsequently fired on July 15. Although Detroit has yet to hire a permanent leader of hockey operations, Horcoff has spent the opening weeks of the season managing trade inquiries. “The truth is when you have a player of Dylan’s caliber available, your phone rings daily,” Horcoff told ESPN. “And my phone rang a lot today.”

The tension spilled into the public eye during training camp. Larkin reported to the team despite an upper-body injury but was stripped of his captaincy. During team introductions at the October 2 home opener against the New York Rangers at Little Caesars Arena, Larkin faced boos from the home crowd. Reports suggest Larkin recently upped his list of teams he’d be willing to be traded to to 10.

Locker Room Response and What Comes Next

While trade talks remain ongoing, the Red Wings have attempted to insulate the rest of the roster from the daily distraction. Head coach Todd McLellan acknowledged the exhaustion surrounding the saga, telling ESPN, “We’re moving on. This has been going on for too long and that’s all we’ve ever talked about.”

Despite the turbulence, Detroit has maintained competitive play on the ice, posting a 5-1-3 record in their past nine games. Following a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night, defenseman Moritz Seider emphasized unity within the squad. Seider remarked that the win meant a little more because “this is our squad.”

“We’ve talked to the teams on Dylan’s list. We’ve talked to other teams and taken calls from other teams around the league that have expressed interest in Dylan. And we just continue to try to find a solution that fits for both sides,” Horcoff said.

Horcoff noted that the organization aims to acquire players who can help immediately while ensuring the long-term success of the franchise. With Larkin suspended and trade discussions intensifying, Detroit prepares to navigate the market without their longtime center.
