Florida State University fired Mike Norvell on Sunday following a 3-5 start to the season, ending a tenure that spanned midway through its seventh year with an overall record of 41-39, ESPN reported.
From Undefeated Highs to a Steep Decline
The turning point for Norvell’s time in Tallahassee did not happen on a Saturday afternoon. It unfolded inside an FSU meeting room on Dec. 3, 2023, when the Seminoles learned they were excluded from the College Football Playoff despite finishing an undefeated regular season and claiming an ACC championship. Norvell leaned forward in his chair in disbelief, and the program never quite recovered its footing.
Although he signed a lucrative new contract months later, the Seminoles collapsed to a 2-10 record in 2024 with just one conference win. A cathartic season-opening win against Alabama in 2025 offered brief relief, but the team stumbled once again to a losing record and only two ACC victories. Norvell lost 17 of his final 21 conference games with the Noles.
Reporting across ESPN outlets highlighted roster-building failures as the central driver of the collapse. Norvell relied heavily on the transfer portal, but when cracks formed in that model, foundational units such as the offensive line stalled out.
The Search for a Successor and Roster Priorities
Florida State must now pivot toward a coach with a clear vision for talent acquisition. The Seminoles operated as a recruiting powerhouse for decades under Bobby Bowden and Jimbo Fisher. However, the next leader will face fierce in-state competition from Miami’s Mario Cristobal and Florida’s Jon Sumrall.

The transition also unfolds without a permanent athletic director in place following the mid-September firing of Michael Alford. Prospective candidates will have to evaluate FSU’s financial commitments, administrative environment, and front-office infrastructure.
ESPN outlined eight potential candidates for the vacancy:
- Jake Dickert: Wake Forest coach, praised for a detailed personnel system alongside general manager Rob Schlaeger and a 15-5 run over two seasons.
- Glenn Schumann: Georgia defensive coordinator with deep ties to the region and championship experience under Nick Saban and Kirby Smart.
- Rhett Lashlee: SMU coach who guided the Mustangs to a CFP appearance and a 43-18 record.
- Jimbo Fisher: Former FSU coach whose tenure included five straight 10-win seasons, four AP top-10 finishes, three ACC titles and a national championship.
- Kenny Dillingham: Arizona State coach and former FSU offensive coordinator who captured a Big 12 title in 2024.
- Eliah Drinkwitz: Missouri coach with a 64-32 overall FBS record and a top-10 finish in 2023.
- Jason Eck: New Mexico coach who built a reputation for physical line play and engineered the nation’s top-ranked scoring defense this fall.
Core Players on the Roster
Whoever inherits the job will inherit a roster featuring key young contributors with remaining eligibility. Standouts identified by Max Olson include wide receiver Micahi Danzy, running back Ousmane Kromah, defensive linemen Mandrell and Darryll Desir, and defensive lineman Kevin Wynn. Securing these core pieces will define the immediate priority for the incoming coaching staff as the transfer portal window approaches.
