Gabonese President Nguema Visits Ghana to Sign 12 Bilateral Agreements

Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema arrived in Accra on Tuesday for a three-day state visit hosted by President John Dramani Mahama. The leaders signed 12 bilateral agreements spanning mining, health, and defense, while Nguema paid tribute to Ghana’s founding president at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

Bilateral Talks and the 12 Memoranda of Understanding at Jubilee House

Gabón’s President, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, began his official three-day state visit to Ghana on Tuesday July 28, 2026, following an invitation from President John Dramani Mahama. The visit ends on Wednesday. The visiting head of state arrived accompanied by senior Gabonese officials and a high-level delegation comprising government ministers, senior officials, and members of the Gabonese business community. A statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the visit as another milestone in the growing bilateral relations between Ghana and Gabon.

Following an inspection of the Guard of Honor and a private tête-à-tête meeting at the Jubilee House in Accra, both leaders led formal bilateral talks on July 28, 2026. Those discussions culminated in Ghana and Gabon signing 12 memoranda of understanding for cooperation in various areas spanning health, mining and mineral value addition, defense and security, and others. Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and the Gabonese Foreign Minister Marie-Edith Dombeneni signed on behalf of their respective countries. The visiting head of state later planted a symbolic tree at the lawns of the Jubilee House.

Economic Collaboration and Scholarship Redirection

The discussions provided an opportunity for both leaders to review the current state of relations and explore new areas of cooperation. According to the statement, these would go beyond existing collaboration in political and diplomatic relations, trade and investment, mining, energy, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, maritime affairs, transport, tourism, education, health, defence and security, environmental protection, climate action and people-to-people exchanges. The statement added that the two leaders were also expected to reaffirm their shared commitment to deepening cooperation and promoting sustainable economic development for the mutual benefit of their countries.

To facilitate investment flows and create an enabling environment for businesses in both countries to collaborate in the areas of manufacturing, agribusiness, transport and logistics, infrastructure development, financial services and value addition, President Mahama said

President Nguema also addressed shifts in educational exchanges, pointing to recent policy adjustments regarding financial support for international students.

“After the recent measures that were taken with respect to decisions that the French government took regarding scholarships for foreign students, and I think that it will be proper for us to look into this direction to see how universities here in Ghana can welcome our students. We cannot compromise the future of our youth and also the construction of our universities in Gabon because the scholarships fees in France have increased and we have decided to redirect our youth to other African countries. It is the same training that is available in our fellow African countries and I think that we can have discussions in this regard.”

Homage to Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Earlier, Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, where he paid tribute to the memory and enduring legacy of Ghana’s founding President and a leading champion of Pan-Africanism, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. The park, designed by Don Arthur, is the iconic final resting place of the first President of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.

The Gabonese President was received at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park by Madam Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.

Regional Security and Rejection of Xenophobia

During the visit, President Mahama and his Gabonese counterpart pledged their commitment to democratic governance, regional peace and African integration. The two leaders underscored the need for African communities to collectively shun and decisively address xenophobic attacks and all forms of discrimination that threaten the cohesion and shared progress of the continent.
