Gov. Mike Braun Launches ADAPT Grant Program for Auto Manufacturing

Indiana Launches $10.79 Million ADAPT Program to Future-Proof Auto Supply Chain

Gov. Mike Braun announced on Tuesday that Indiana is launching a new federal grant initiative aimed at helping the state’s automotive sector meet accelerating market demand for hybrid, electric, and hydrogen-powered vehicles. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the program is called Automotive Diversification and Production Transition, or ADAPT, according to WRTV. The $10.79 million grant program is specifically designed to create jobs and help small and medium-sized manufacturing businesses compete in an evolving automotive market.

Indiana currently hosts more than 500 automotive parts suppliers and produces 1.3 million cars annually, marking the second-highest overall vehicle production in the country. ADAPT aims to bridge that gap by offering grants ranging from $100,000 to $1 million, allowing local businesses to invest in and develop commercial-ready capabilities across multiple vehicle markets.

The Mechanics of the ADAPT Grants and Timeline

The state is one of five states with a significant automotive workforce selected to receive a share of $50 million dedicated to easing the transition toward alternative vehicle and engine models. Selected companies must provide a one-to-one match investment.

The funding operates on a reimbursement model. Companies are required to invest first and will be reimbursed through the ADAPT program for eligible expenses. Indiana-headquartered manufacturers were encouraged to begin submitting applications starting Tuesday, with the application window remaining open through Jan. 8. Businesses selected for the program will have until the end of 2028 to fully implement their projects, facility upgrades, and workforce training initiatives.

“Indiana is a leading state for automotive manufacturing, and the ADAPT program will help position the sector for future growth while skilling up our workforce and creating high-demand jobs for Hoosiers,” Gov. Mike Braun said in a statement. “The program will help manufacturers meet growing demand for hybrid, electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, ensuring Indiana remains a global leader in the automotive supply chain.”

State officials emphasize that the primary goal is protecting thousands of Hoosier jobs.
